which Sata hdd to get?

hello guys,
i want to have a minimum of 500 gb of storage,
my target is 250 gb- 300 gb hdd's 7200RPM

which one do u advice? so far i am between the hitachi t7k250(8 mb buffer) and the maxtor diamond max 10 300gb(16 mb buffer) and the maxtor maxline III 300gb 16 mb buffer)


what do u think guys?
 
i got two 400gb sata , but they are crappy ibm hitachis but so far so good. 800gb =) running win 2000 server familiy

i dont think i'll buy any 400gb hdd, the choice is between the hitachi t7k250(8 mb buffer) and the maxtor diamond max 10 300gb(16 mb buffer) and the maxtor maxline III 300gb 16 mb buffer)
 
Well, to narrow it down even more, the Maxline III and DM10 are the same exact drive; Maxtor claims that it bins the MLIII for better reliability, but rest assured the performance specs are identical. IIRC, the Hitachi's run a bit cooler than the Maxtors right now, but they offer very similar performance, with the Maxtor being slightly faster. What will you be using the storage for?

nothing much, just to store videos and music,
i just want a very fast HDD because i open like 20 applications same time, i just want the best speed.

Damn I had no idea that IBM still was making hard drives. Has anyone heard if IBM has inproved their design?

While I like Seagate's offerings, if he's concerned about speed, then stick with the 7200.7 vs the .8s. They're faster. But in reality any >250gb SATA drive with fill the needs of someone who is just opening videos and music from the drive, even more than one at a time. That's not exactly I/O intensive

as an overall i will go for the Hitachi t7k250 they are the leader in faster drives now,\specially with their new platter,

IBM isn't making HDs anymore. HItachi bought the division and they are tons better than what IBM did. No more Deathstars.

u are right, i honestly think they have improved their design. they do seem to be running cooler and they are not even warm to the touch

as for the deathstars these probs only occoured in the 40gb range, i never had problems with any of the other capacitys
 
A friend of mine had a 60GB Deathstar fail on him.

My vote goes to the 300GB Maxtor DM10's.

Me too I used to buy maxtors drawn in by a low price tag. Then after going though two of them, and having them both get very noisy over time. I have owned 2 seagates since those and I could never hear them with my case on. With my case off you can only hear my 700.8 under full load, and even then is pretty quiet.

i agree, my 7200.8's rule. If youve had probs with hard drives, go seagate, and youll never go back.

Solid synthetic scores != Good application performance on the desktop. However, Hitachi has never disappointed in coupling great mechanical performance with great hard drive logic/desktop performance tricks, and it appears that they have been able to hold the line on seek times with the denser platters. Cool and quiet to boot.

All of this bodes well for some pretty impressive application performance from the T7K250 - we shall see when we get more data. I smell movement in the Buyer's Guide soon, and the 16MB Maxtor drives had better watch out ;)
