I've been looking at the Samsung 711T and the 173P. Both look excellent, however...specs wise the 711T looks a little bit better. They both have the same response time, but the 711T has a 1000:1 contrast ratio. However the 173P has a slightly higher brightness of 270 as opposed to 250 of the 711T. So which is the better moniter? All I know is that for some reason the 173P goes for over $100 more online...so what the hell? Thanks and merry christmas. :)

I can't say much about the 711T since I've never used one but you have to realize that all those specs are not exact numbers. From what I see, that's a PVA monitor and it most likely uses the same, or very similar panel as the 173P does. When the 173P and 193P came out, Samsung claimed the contrast ratio of 800:1 but then they realized that they underestimated the specs so now they claim both monitors are 1000:1. As for why is the 173P more expensive... well, I guess it looks miles better and is extremely well built (it's bezel is not made of plastic).

Hmmm...anyone else have any info or opinions on either of these two displays? Btw, thanks Roger, you're informative as always.

The tough part about comparing the 173p or 193p is that you need to have it hooked directly in to a computer with no multiplexer so you can run MagicTune and move its brightness up from the factory default of 50%. I finally found a Media Center PC at Fry's that had a 193p directly plugged in, and it was a completely different monitor. You can also try asking them to do this for you, but they'll either need the CD or an internet connection to install MagicTune. Plus I've never seen the 711T in a store.

Ah, I found a clue. The 711T just came out in November 2004, but the 173P has been out since November 2003. Maybe the 711T is essentially the 173P with the black plastic case instead of slim metal case? Just a guess.

Both have the PVA panel, which IMHO is the best panel you can buy for reading (e.g. non-gaming activities).
