I am looking to buy 2x1024 ddr400 sticks of ram.

I would like to know what sticks people would recommend for overclocking and for not overclocking.

Heh, the old RAM question.

Eclipse will tell you Crucial Ballistic, which I also agree is great RAM.

I’m using Mushkin “991483”, in “MY” machine the Mushkin did a bit better over clock wise and bandwidth wise.

Therein lays a main issue. There are a number of great RAM manufactures out there but not every stick will give the same results in every board. Even the same board from the same company is very likely to yield different results with the same sticks of RAM. Thus no matter what you buy to get the absolute max from your 2 gig you will need to play super tuner and do a bit of playing. Spend some time at your motherboard manufactures site and have a look at their qualification page to see what they recommend. Same goes with the RAM manufacture you pick.

I might also point out that there is a limited use, need and or benefit for 2 gigs beyond 1 or two games, bragging rights, or you are a hard-core tweeker.

If you’re not going to over clock and run your RAM at default speeds then again, Crucial or Mushkin “normal” 1-gig sticks will do you just fine.

the patriot 1gb sticks that are rated for 2-3-2 are good for stock, but from what i can tell, the crucial will normally hold a decent edge once you try to max out the ram.

any of the ddr500 1gb sticks will be good for overclocking. as bill said, the ushkin is good. there's basically four choices:
g.skill
mushkin
ocz
crucial

the former 3 use samsung UCCC chips and the last uses micron 5b D. in balls out overclocking, the crucial ballistix holds crown, but the mushkin has the tightest stock timings (3-4-3) and the g.skill is the cheapest.

No problem, just a 58 year old “Grasshopper” helping out a 19 year old “Grasshopper’

Only place I disagree is OCZ, I’ve seen way too many either DOB or not up to snuff for me to reliably recommend that product to anyone. Yes, I know their tech support is much better then it used to be, but they still seem to suffer some quality control issues at the moment.

is that the cas 2.5 or the 3? i suspect the 3 overclock better than the 2.5 since its got a looser timing correct? mine are 2.5 and they can go 225 at 2.5-3-3-5

tvdang, all crucial value should be cas3. try 3-3-3 and see how much better they oc. my crucial value 1gb stick got to around 225mhz at 2.5-3-3 too, but managed 263mhz at 3-3-3

O-P-M, there is no noticable difference between the two. even in benches, it's pretty small
