Hi,
I'm trying to design a good raid 5 system for data storage on my network, but I need some help choosing the controller and the drives.
The host system (dedicated):
What I've got:
AMD Athlon xp 1500 (or thereabouts)
Abit MAX II AT7 board
256mb ddr ram (512?) Would that matter?
40gb system drive with fedora core 4
What I need:
Controller: pci, raid-5-able, growable arrays?
drives: western digital 250's? whatever cool deal is avail (like the outpost one today for a 200gb at $70)
Powersupply?
I'm thinking of the highpoint 454 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16816115016 ) because it allows up to 8 pata drives to be connected, but I'd like to be able to grow the array later on and I dont see any cards that can do that. Is the grow technology only reserved for more expensive cards?
Also, what drives would you use? On newegg the pricepoint seems to be the WesternDigital 250's. I've no problems with WD, and they have a 3 year warrenty so thats a plus.
EDIT:
I have a dual pII 333 system with 512mb of ram if dually's are better for this type of thing, or if proc speed doesnt really matter....
Thanks in advance for any help,
-Dustin
