I decided to purchase Grid due to the 50% off sale this weekend on Steam...I've always played all my PC games (including racers) using my keyboard/mouse but want to try it with a controller...can someone recommend an excellent/best controller to use for racing games like Grid?...I've never used one so something a little user friendly would be nice as well

xbox 360 controller is your best bet. its plug and play so its very easy to use.

I recently got Grid for my PC and I have the above mentioned controller for PC. I did not have to set anything up with the controller and it automatically worked in Grid just as the 360 version did when I beat the game on my 360.

Great game too btw, one of the best racing games I have played. If you are willing to spend a bit of money though, I would suggest looking into getting a actual wheel as it can really make the game fun.

The 360 controller is the best PC game controller out there. For anything that doesn't require heavy d-pad use, it will do great.

I have the 360 controller and I've used it on several racing games. Great and easy to use and setup and work with etc etc.

Ps I've gone through about 4-5 different controllers before settling on this one.

For a racing game, actual wheels are still the best for following the racing line and hugging walls down to the millimeter while losing minimum speed. This means you can get a car for speed rather than acceleration.

I've raced with both joystick and wheel. The joystick works best for agile cars with good acceleration to make up for the loss in speed when you do sharp turns. The wheel allows you to follow the optimal racing line perfectly so you don't even have to do sharp turns and the gas/break pedals give you maximum control when taking on the corners.

I can recommend a Momo racing wheel, they're considerably cheaper than a G25 and it's accurate enough that you don't even need a deadzone.

BTW, you know what tap-turning is right? You'll still be doing it on the thumbstick somewhat if you were to play on a joypad.

I think the Xbox 360 controller is the best way to go if you are strictly looking for a gamepad but if you can afford it I would definitely recommend buying a racing wheel like a G25 or MOMO wheel for racing games because it is much more enjoyable and easier to use, in my opinion, than a controller.

I took a look at the Xbox 360 controller and I don't see how that would make playing the game better then on my PC...it still has a few buttons that need to be pushed so how will that make it any different then using my mouse/keyboard combo?...if I'm still going to have to push buttons etc I'd rather play it on my keyboard which I'm used to...or does the Xbox controller handle much better then a keyboard?

this is the Xbox controller people are referring to correct?

or maybe getting an actual wheel would be better as a few people have suggested...but since I don't play a ton of racing games I would be somewhat wasting $$

The great thing about the 360 controller is that it has pressure sensitive triggers and sticks that make it infinitely more enjoyable than the kb/m - even if you are a casual player. If you want to save money but you still want to make the experience more enjoyable, don't hesitate to pick up a controller, you won't regret it. Although I do think that a racing wheel is a much better experience, but only if you consider yourself a big racing fan or if you can see yourself putting enough time into the games to justify the cost. I personally don't think that I would ever play a racing game without at least a controller to play it with.

Any Xbox 360 controller will work with your computer, but if you buy a wireless one you will need to buy this for it to work.

I use an old xbox pad. I cut the end off and added a usb plug to it. For ROMs i use my PS2 pad with a usb conterter.

Or you can buy the "for Windows" version which comes bundled with the receiver.

I just received my Xbox 360 wired controller and was wondering if it is necessary to install the software that came with the controller?...is the software just useless bloatware or is it actually necessary to use the controller?

It is only the driver for the controller. The software really doesn't have any special configuration software with it. Games either support it or they don't, and almost all of the "Games for Windows" branded ones do support it. One way or another the software has to be installed to work. You can either use the cd that came with it or by downloading it straight from MS when you search for drivers. I wouldn't be surprised if Windows 7 has the drivers included.

I'll echo the recommendations for the 360 controller. Works great with Grid, imo. Also, regarding the drivers for the controller / wireless receiver, this link should get you what you need if you wanted to download them direct from Microsoft.

is there any way of customizing the button layout in game on the Xbox 360 controller?...I don't see a way of changing any of the default button movements

for those that have played GRID using the Xbox 360 controller:

do you enable the Force Feedback option?...I tried enabling it but it feels too weird and strange and takes away from my enjoyment of the game...doesn't feel natural...just feels like random buzz shots to my hand...doesn't have a real 'force feedback' feel to it...are there people that enjoy the game with it enabled?

I used old XBOX 1 controller with the free driver online. It can be found here. It works very well, and I've enjoyed assassin's creed (for a couple hours) and GRID on it.

Funny story, I thought the driver or my wiring job was going to crap when playing GRID, but then realized that it was just the damage I had done to my car that screwed the alignment up, and not the hardware's fault. Fun, yet frustrating, stuff to race with!

Haha I remember soldering on a USB A connector onto my old Xbox controller. I actually used it on my Mac (at the time) to play Halo.

forget the xbox controller, why not go a bit farther and get a Logitech MOMO racing steering wheel. its great with grid. i love it and i am currently playing it now. depending to your prefrences you will have to set up the logictech proflier to your needs but other then that, have fun!

Better of looking for a racing wheel. G25, GT 3 RS or others of Fanatec offerings... If you go oh my god the price get the DFP GT or the Fanatec Carrera wheel :)

It´s quite close to the G25 in specs though no H-shifter and not as good pedals. But the wheel is about on par. Fanatec is a league above that but cost a bit more as well.
