Ok heres what I was planning on getting:

Cooler Master RP-650
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171014

BUT, if I HAVE TO (no i really dont want to spend this much but), I can buy either one of these:

OCZ Stealth Extreme
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3092557&CatId=1483

Coolmax:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1543967&CatId=1483

Ultra:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2974508&CatId=1483

Could you guys tell me if the cooler master is a piece of crap or not? If it is, which of the other 3 PSU's should i get?
I really don't want to spend 70 bucks, I cant justify it.

Thanks, Adam

I'll go ahead and ask:

What kind of computer will this be powering? What components are you using?

It's a good place to start.

Its for my upgrade project.

The final project will be the following:

E6750 Core 2 Duo
Asus P5K-E
Radeon 2900XT
Sound Blaster AUdigy 2
2 Sata Hard drives
2 IDE Hard drives
1 Sata Optical Drive
1 IDE CD-RW possibly
PCI IDE card if I connect the CD RW drive
probably 3 or 4 case fans
Stock Cooling

Thats what it will be powering after I'm done upgrading

PS: Make sure you guys answer my question about the cooler master, remember im considering that before all the others.
obviously the OCZ and such are better...

I 2nd the Ultra. The OCZ will be pushing alot of ripple powering those parts. Not good for components in the long run.

ok the ripple thing is good to know. good thing i cancelled the order last night for it.

I just missed the Rebate on the Ultra, so I might just buy the cooler master instead. What do you guys thinks? The amperage on the rails is about the same (2 amps less on one of the 12 volts rails in the CM, thats mainly it). I'll sleeve the cables myself. Unless the Ultra is actually worth it maybe i'll wait till it goes on sale again at tiger direct.

Personally, I'd get the CM first. I have (well, had. Gifted) the X-Finity 600W, and it was unpleasantly loud compared to my others. That, and it's a 600W rated unit with under 400W on the +12V supply, IIRC. It was reliable, just loud and I wouldn't run anything high-end off of it.

I also had the CM RealPower450W a couple of years back and loved it.

Ok well someone on another forum jsut told me what you said (not the voltage) so it looks like I'm getting that cooler master! I'll let you guys know how it goes!

THANK YOU! I APPRECIATE IT!

None of those.

The coolermaster is not 650w. It's a lie. It's only 500w.
OCZ StealthXstream has way out of spec ripple.
Ultra, best of the bunch.
Coolmax, not even worth considering.

Try the Corsair VX450.

Finally, the voice of knowledge comes around. :)

how is it "a lie"?

Because it's literally a 500w unit with a 600 or 650w label slapped on. It will not do 600 or 650.

PSUs run at about 80% efficiency so keep this in mind.
I would recommend the Corsair 620HX. The OCZ 700W may have the ripple problem but that only occurs at or near full load, and you will not be anywhere near that point. Still, a vote for the new Corsair.

Well if you're paying for a 700w in which you can only really load it up to 500w and still have it perform within spec, why not just buy a 500w psu that performs up to 500w?

I read in numerous places that the newer OCZ 700W wasn't experiencing the ripple problem. Also, I didn't know much about the unit when I was purchasing it, but thus far, it works great. Nevertheless, you are absolutely right. It is wiser and more cost efficient to get a 500W psu that performs as specified. However, it still isn't recommended to use it up to full wattage, and you should have some in reserve. A 500W psu at around 80% efficiency puts out about 400W of power.

How many of those places used an actual ATE instead of a system? A system's PWM is designed to filter out ripple, and the few places that even try to meausre for ripple (very few) will have it show as less than what it really is.

That being said, it's a fine unit with the exception of the ripple. It's definatly not recommended to use a psu to the maximum specified wattage for extended periods of time. It's like driving a car at the max speed non stop. Sure it'll work, but it's not a good idea.
