Which PSU is right for me?

After reading all the available info here, my head is swimming.

Im a novice builder, about to build my second PC.

All the parts arent final, but it will include an AMD64 3200(939) and a 6800GT(pci-e). I plan to do some OC'ing.

The more i read, the more im confused about what needs a 24pin this or nonono you can put a 20 pin in it and its ok...or does it have dual 12 volt lines and how many amps are on it cause it could use 110watts...blah!

What would you guys recommend as a good PSU, possible PSU/case combo so that when i am actually assembling this thing, I can just do it.
 
Skip the PSU/case combo. As for power supply you will probably want to get an ATX2.0 supply which has the 2 12v rails. Before we go any farther what do you want in the PSU because there are lot's of right fits for hardware but fewer right fits for the user.

Do you want modular cables, some "bling", quiet PSU, efficent PSU, PFC, adjustable voltages, or anything else that might be a must in the PSU?

Don't be mixing up ATX2.0 and ATX12V v2.0 now. ;)

I dont think im ready for any of that yet. I imagine i just want an efficient psu that can handle a pci-e 6800gt and an amd64 3200.
 
You bring up efficiency, the Seasonic S12-600 is among one of the better ones in terms of efficiency. Low heat output, low noise output, and ready to handle pretty much whatever you throw at it. But it is probably overkill. ;)

I'm not sure if the S12-500 has the PCI-E power connection...

Well the seasonic thatg Korruption mentioned would definately do and be nice and efficent, quiet, and have PFC. The other i missed when asking was price. Give the before making a psu thread a gander and see which PSUs strike you and then we can help you narrow it down. Basically becuae right now I could run through a really long list of PSU's that would cover you from various Seasonics, to Enermax, to PCP&C, to ZIppy, to FSP, to Superflower.

also...as im searching psu's at newegg...they have a search criteria for dual 12v rails, but i dont seem to see any of them as "ATX2.0"...rather they're ATX12V".

Thats a little confusing. As long as it has dual 12v rails, is that ok? Does it matter what the amperage is on each line?

Ok so there are two things you will see referenced. ATX12v2.01 which is PSU and ATX2.03 which is a motherboard standard. You can find all this on formfactors.org

Which PSU's are you looking at? Obviously with your load 2 very small 12v rails may be an issue. 2 rails 15 amps+ should be kosher so long as it is a good quality unit.........so post a link and we will give it a look.

Im noticing that some of the psu's have differing amps, ie...some have 15, 17, 17.5 amps on the 12v line...would i be correct in assuming higher is better?
 
Higher is better, the guys at DFI-Street recommend at least 28A between the 12V lines for any serious A64+GF6800 rigs, and even more for overclocking (without even getting into SLI).

At the risk of sounding repetitive, look into Antec's NeoPower. It's modular, has a 120mm fan to keep noise down, it's ATX12V v2 compatible with 33A split-rail, and has a 24-pin plug with converter down to 20 pins.
 
that neo has a lower MTBF and one of the 12v lines is 15amps...some of the others have 18 on both. looks real nice though.
 
I would almost recommend the truepower II except that as of yet it is an unknown. It should be good but without knowing anything in particular about it from a good review <cough>jonnyguru review one<cough> can't whole heartily recommend it but if you decide on it expect just basic spec compliance.......everything else will be gravy.

For a PSU assume guilt until proven innocent.
 
Also, some motherboards/accessories still require a -5V line. The TP2.0 doesn't have it, and someone here on the forums was just having an issue with his DDR Booster because of it. I think the Neo2 (or is it Neo4?) like the -5V rail as well, but I'm not sure. With that mobo being so popular, I'd want a PSU that could handle it.
