Ok, Im building a budget system and wondering what the best processor would be for what I do. Basically I do web surfing, listen to mp3’s, watch streaming video, play World of Warcrack with the occasional pick up game of MOHAA:Spearhead. Aside from that I don’t done a lot of overclocking, I do however, like to rummage through my systems and tweak them. Here is what I have come up with so far:

Biostar Tforce 4U (this one has already been decided on)
AMD Opty 144, 3500+ (512mb of L2 cache), or 3700+ (1mb of L2 Cache)
G.Skill F1-3200PHU2-1GBZX (PC3200 2x512mb dual channel kit)
SeaSonic S12-500 ATX12V PSU
Hitachi Deskstar 7K80 80gb Harddrive
Lite-On Black IDE SOHD-169SV DvD-Rom
Lite-On Black IDE SHW-160P6S DVD Burner
Sapphire x1600XT 256mb PCI-E vcard or EVGA Nvidia 6800GS 256mb PCI-E vcard

There will be other odds and ends in there but I just don’t know if I will truly see a difference if I get a processor with 512mb of L2 vs. 1mb of L2.

Thanks for help. Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated

I have a 3500+ E4..no complaints at all..it's at 2.6ghz right now on stock cooling. Waiting for the xp-90 to get here. I have it coupled with a DFI lanparty nf4 motherboard, evga 7800gt and 2gb of gskill val ram. I play mostly fps and wow and I have had no problems with any of the games i play.

Other than benchmarks..I have never noticed a huge difference between 1mb and 512kb L2 with the A64. I would deffinitly go with the 6800gs over the 1600xt. The GS is a great card for the money in my opinion. Hope this helps, good luck with the build!

Thanks for the suggestions and info. Keep your eye on the Case mod forum for my work log. I will be modding a Chieftec/Antec/Chenming Dragon and this is my first mod. I am trying to save as much money as I possibly can on this build so we will see how things change.

Keep the suggestions coming people!!!

1mb is better than 512K

So if you have the same or better chance of o/c'in like you do with those opterons, it's a no brainer. You made the right choice (unless you want togo dual core.)

Well basically its all up in the air right now. Gonna be about 3 months before I can build. Thing is that right now I can get an Opty 144 for $180 w/ s+h vs. a A64 3700+ w/ close to same specs for around $240. I am thinking the opty in all cases would be much better seeing as a 512mb 3200+ would cost me almost the same, actually about $10 cheaper.

I guess I have really just answered my own question right there.

Thanks guys.
