We're looking into a new DigiCam purchase and like always, we can't decide which one would be best. We really don't need much fancyness and since we just bought a house, money is a little tight.

Right now we own a refurbished HP 735 and let me tell you, that camera drives me nuts. It eats batteries for breakfast, is slow as hell and the LCD is so jumpy that it's just no fun. On top, the pictures are subpar as well, especially in the dark or with the included flash.

My question is: Which camera is best in this segment? We like zoom a lot, so the better the optical zoom capability, the more we might enjoy it.

My considerations so far:

- Panasonic DMC-LZ2 (~180)
- Canon A520 (~$160)
- Kodak Z740 (~210)

Anything else out there in the approximate price range that is worth it/better than the above? I understand there are many more better cameras out there, but budget is REALLY tight, so i can't go much over the $200 range, so a Rebel is out of questions as is the Canon S2-IS. Even though, image stabilizer is tempting.

Well the Panasonic DMC-LZ2 you listed has IS, also you can find the canon S1 IS for roughly $200.

Where do you find the S1IS for $200???

By the way, where do i find good prices for digicams in first place?!

Well, bought a Panasonic DMC-FZ5. It was on sale at a local retailer and I couldn't resist after testing it. They also had the Canon A520 (as well as many others), but the quality and features of the FZ5 convinced me.

Below is a first test for the macro abilities of the new cam...(reduced in size to fit this forum; otherwise unedited)

i usually check links off of techbargains.com for camera deals, although lately amazon has had some pretty good deals on electronics. canon's are pretty popular

id look for reviews of the ones you are looking at.
