I've been away from video cards for almost 2 years now and have no idea which card (nvidia) out now is the best bang for the buck. I see they have the gts 250 all the way up to the gtx 295. Currently I have an 8800 gts that I got when it first came out. I'd like to know which card out now for the 200 series is the best bang for the buck like how the 8800gts was when it first came out? I mainly game at 1680x1050 and my computer specs are as follows:

Asus P5K deluxe
Q6600 oc'd to 3.2
4 gigs of ram
150 gig raptor
Vista Ultimate 64-bit

Most will probably agree that a GTX260 will be the best value for your money right now, especially at that resolution. I used the rig in my sig with a GTX260 with my old 22" monitor and never had any issues maxing out most games (save for Crysis and full AA in FC2).

I own an Evga GTX285. It definetly does the job, but I think it's overkill for your gaming resolution.
I would go with the GTX260, it will probably handle everything you throw at it and you will still have the ability to play at a higher resolution if you want.

Why not just stay with what he has? If it's an 89800GTX then you should still be fine, except at FULL everything.

I would got with a gtx 260 or 275. Both cards should be great for play games at full.

250 isn't much faster than what you have, so scratch that. NV GTX260 is probably the best bang for the buck as far as NV cards that are actually a significant upgrade go.

Of course, I wouldn't upgrade unless you actually have a game you're wanting more performance out of. On that note, Bethesda is evil. They've gotten me 3 times in a row. Morrowind made me upgrade my procs (I started out running it at 2048x1536 w/ 16x FAA (Parhelia)... so CPU bound on a dual P3 1.0GHz that 640x480 was maybe 2fps faster, dropped it to 1600x1200 since text was too small, then upgraded to a dual 2600+ and dropped it to 1024x768, kept the AA), Oblivion cost me $1100 (7900GTX + board... needed a dual Opteron PCI-e board), and Fallout 3 ate the 7900GTX I bought to get through Oblivion. I couldn't deal with the jaggies from chainlink fences and protruding rebar in Fallout 3.

8800 GTS practically IS a GTS250

8800 GTS practically IS a GTS250

Pretty close. 112 stream processors at 600MHz for the 8800GT compared to 128 at 738MHz for the GTS250 according to NV's standard specs. The 9000 series is sort of a joke, they're really just 8000 series boards but NV either decided they didn't have enough numbers or wanted to pull a marketing fast one. Most the 9800 series cards should have been 89xx and the rest 88xx cards IMHO, and the 9600GT would make a right proper 8700. However we slice the 9800 series, an upgrade from an 8800GT is only worth bothering with if it's a GTX260 or better or a similarly performing card from the red team.

9800GTX+ w/ 1GB ram really is still impressive, especially for 150 bucks.

u can easily snatch a gtx 260 for about $150-160AR, so go with that. or u can go for a 275 for a little more.
