lo chaps

so on such a nice sunny bank holiday...i was doin the usual on my comp....nothing straining...then all ov a sudden the entire power for upstairs cut out...but downstairs was fine?? then after switching the circuit breakers went back upstairs to survey the damage...

everything was working except my machine. so no power was going to the machine...so i changed the fuse on the plug and the power was then then i flicked on the power button the BANG!! from inside the machine...i dont kno where but it looked like from the mobo....so shi*ting myself...i took the machine appart and now im running the machine in the open air.

the prob is that im running the macine with my antec smartblue 350w psu insted of my usual Antec truepower 480w...thats where the problem may come from.

im running my rig
2500+ @ 2.31Ghz
Asus a7n8x delux
9800pro
2x hdd's
1xdvd-rw
and spare Antec smartblue 350w psu

my machine seems to be running fine(im on it right now) but looks like im not gonna risk it and prob get a new psu...even if my 480w one works....i simply wont risk it.

im gonna give a list of psu's i like please let me know which one i should get.
my likes are....NO lights...big Quite fans...400w atleast....and modular would be better.

The Hiper is very nice i want it as well.......reviews say its pretty stable on a rather high end machine......but one review i saw said it doesnt have a passive PFC, or active......:(

i think i still might get it tho......:p since ive seen a few [H] with it, and they have higher end systems than mine

they are all pretty much overkill for your computer, i would just get the modstream.

Don't get a dual rail PSU because your CPU rail will go unused. That board regulates CPU off of the 5V rail. That said, ever single A7N8X I've worked with throws modern power supplies into crossload hell. 12V shoots up above the 5% tolerance and the 3.3V and 5V drop below the 5% tolerance.

Antec's actually suffer the worse on A7N8X boards, it seems. So right off the bat I'm going to say no Antecs.

That board is one of the few times I suggest searching for a single 12V rail power supply where the 5V rail is higher than or equal to the 12V. Like a 30A/30A 5V/12V or even a 40A/24A or the like.

Unfortunately, such a suggestion is the entithesis of a "future-proof" recommendation. So if you ever replace the Asus board, replace the power supply too... or use this as an excuse/opportunity to lose the Asus board and buy both a new board and power supply. :D

well...i was thinking of upgrading next year to Athlon64 anyway...so the newer psu would come in handy...as the newer machine require more power.

Yes.. It would. But what I'm saying is it's not necessarily going to work well with the board you have NOW.

Rather than just telling you, I'm going to enable you to become a PSU selection God.

Using this link http://forum.msi.com.tw/index.php?topic=80186.0 get the PSUCalculator.

Next plug in all the peripherals that you intend to use.

Add in any near-future add-ons.

Look at your requirements and purchase a PSU that meets or exceeds your specifications. Before purchasing, go back and double-check.

Now you'll know that you are set rather than relying on advice that may or may not be the best for your specific setup.

Well a couple of issues here. 1) That calculator is not real helpful in this case as he has a processor that is not listed in it. 2) It would be wise to head the words of jonny about crossloading especially when dealing with processors regulated off of the 5v line as opposed to the 12v. This is not something one can lear from a calculator and become a "god" with a spredsheet.

yeah thanks dude...i downloaded the calculator an it didnt really help me much....the funny thing is that even tho ive been warened about the cross-loading ive been using a truepower 480w psu for a year and a half.....so i dont know whay today...of all days it decided to play like a joker.

That's the funny thing about computer parts. Sometimes they blow up right away... sometimes they take a year and a half! And everyone is always looking for a "cause" like it was some certain chain of events that lead up to a particular faiure when it's really just "timing." ;)

just to point out, you say you dont want lights in the psu, well, the modstream has blue lights in it
