I'm in the market for a new mouse. My old school G5 met some Pepsi and I'm most definitely out of warranty. By old school I mean its the orange/silver one with only one side button and not the two side button blue one.

The only ones that I'm confused on are the two Sidewinders. By description I can't find anything that separates them as different models. Is it just that one is OEM and the other is a retail package? As for the G9, is it an improvement over the G5?

I will most likely pick one of these up at a B&M here. Just using Newegg links as a reference.
 
If you still have your receipt, contact Logitech and they'll send you a new mouse.

Did you get it from Newegg? Should be in order history. If you got it from Best Buy with a credit card, you can ask them online for a copy of the receipt (did this a few weeks ago, easy process). I imagine Fry's or other big B&M can do that as well.

Even if you can't get the receipt, I'd still try to get an RMA because the G5 has a 3 year warranty.
 
Honestly, as a G9 owner, I don't think that it's worth it to get it... Just stick with G5. I find the G5/MX500-series-style shape to be more comfy, and the specs/"performance" increase has no practical advantages, just theoretical ones.
 
No dice man. I'm just gonna get a new one. I'm kind of annoyed with the lack of a second side button anyway.
 
I'll throw my vote at the G5 as well, hands down my favorite mouse of all time. MX518 didn't cut it for me, though it is a nice mouse as well.
 
Picked up the Sidewinder at work today. Wasn't going to pay the outrageous BB price for a 2nd gen (blue two tone with the second side button a la MX518) G5. After going from the MX518 to the G5, going back to anything less on the Logitech side felt kind of awkward. I tried the G9 that was on the shelf, and honestly I felt like I was holding a hockey puck. Then again that is just me and how I felt it to work out for me.

And yeah, I could've probably gone to Newegg, but the difference is about 3 bucks after shipping. Not worth the wait when I have a malfunctioning mouse. Not to mention paying 8 and a quarter for shipping on an item that's less than 50 bucks by itself is a bit retarded. Maybe if it was free shipping, but as of this post only the G9 has it available of the four of what I selected, and I'm not paying 90 bucks for a mouse that doesn't fit my hand well.

Thus far I have to say the Sidewinder is not a bad mouse. Works very well with my well worn RatPadz GS. Will have to compliment it with a new desk and a Ratpadz XT when I get the cash this holiday season (as my desk is falling apart at the seams literally, and my GS has survived my abusive ways, but its still time to step up). Using the weights in a 10g-5g-10g configuration and so far I like it.

One thing that did annoy me about the G5 was the wheel was too sensitive so when I pressed down on it to open new tabs in a browser it'd slide down or up and hit another link. This doesn't seem to be the case with the Sidewinder.

Thus far I'd have to say this is a nice step outside Logitech. But if I were to go back, I'd probably get a G5 again. Its just unfortunate that good deals can't be had on a G5 right now and I can't get one for discount at my work because apparently we either are out of stock or we don't carry them anymore. Knowing my luck we will probably get a shipment of them first thing Monday to spite/mock me.

That said, I do miss my G5 already. But I don't think there will be much disappointment in the Sidewinder. Then again I haven't tried Photoshopping with it or playing any FPS games.
 
wow... I find it strange that not many liked the G9. The G5 is a great mouse.. but coming from a Copperhead background, I didn't really like the left/right buttons. I love the G9 for gaming - using my G5 for browsing and photoshop..etc.

I love my G9, I got it awhile back and every mouse I've touched since simply pales in comparison. There's really no other mouse on the market like it as far as ergonomics are concerned... some love it, some hate it... I love mine (with the precision grip).
 
I use the Razer Lachesis 4000dpi and pretty much used every other single mouse on the market. A mouse is truly a personal piece od hardware and no one can tell you what will work best for you. I have my mouse adjusted for what i consider to be optimal settings for me. Good luck with you quest.

If you have medium hands: g9

i just personally picked up the MX1100 mouse , - Right Now Still getting use to it , but seems great an fits my hand just right... although it uses batteries (2aa's) was hoping it was going to be like the mx1000 w/rechargeable base

but seems to be a great mouse all in all
 
I'd go with the G9. It has a great scrollwheel, adjustable weights, changeable grips, and is pretty comfortable for me. It glides very smoothly on my icemat.

But anyway, tip for everyone here: STAY AWAY FROM THE LACHESIS.
 
laser mice are not as good as optical. this extensive benchmark has proven that. Laser mice are fine at high sensitivity, but if you are a low sens gamer then they are less than ideal. Optical mice are better performers and are a lot cheaper as well. I went from the orange G5 (same as the OP) to an mx518 and omg what a difference, i no longer ended up looking at the roof when i moved my mouse fast in ut2k4 ( i am a low sens gamer). The g5 suffered from terrible negative acceleration and it couldnt keep up with my movements, i had it flashed with the 1.2 firmware and spent about an hour tweaking it to get it as good as i could. i plugged the mx518 in and it was better OOTB than the tweaked and firmwared G5.
The best mice you can buy are optical and i would recommend you any of these 3

3000 dpi is a gimmick, weights are a gimmick, and so are changeable grips. I was like "wow i can customise my g5's weight" i ended up not even using the weights at all.

oh yeah, here in New Zealand, i payed $120 for my G5 the week it was released and i payed $50 for my mx518. hardware and software are expensive here, but i imagine there would be a big price difference in whatever country the OP is from.

all i can say is from experience, the mx518 is the best mouse i have ever used and i have used the orange G5, an mx510, a copperhead (which was a lot better than the g5 even with a laser sensor as well), a 3.0 and of course, my beloved mx518. I highly suggest going "old school" with your mouse and buying a mouse with an optical sensor. The tech is better and it will be easier on your pocket
 
well, soandso, that test doesn't sound so practical to me. I've used the mx518 and prefer the G9 (which is a laser mouse). I'm more accurate with the G9, too. Go figure.
