thanks

Gigabyte DS3 and Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 or E4300. How come you're basing your computer around a particular type of RAM?

it's actually a build for my buddy that already bought some ram and gpu and wants to build a system around it

Oh right, that's fair enough. I'd definitely get a Core 2 Duo processor, because they're very well priced and beat their AMD counterparts. What sort of overclocking goal does he have? Because that RAM is probably going to be a limiting factor.

That RAM will allow you to get the CPUs FSB frequency up to 333Mhz, without putting any stress on the RAM at all. So, if you were to run the RAM at it's rated speed, here is a list of possible overclocks that should be achievable with the common C2D processors:

E4300 --- 333 x 9 = 3.0Ghz
E6300 --- 333 x 7 = 2.3Ghz
E6400 --- 333 x 8 = 2.6Ghz
E6600 --- 333 x 9 = 3.0Ghz

This is just a guideline of what should be achievable with these processors and that PC2-5300 RAM. Bear in mind though: there are other limiting factors, too. I thought i'd just give you a quick run-down, just so you know what you're looking at. Chances are, that RAM can be overclocked, too, allowing you to push the processor's FSB frequency even higher.

What kind of gpu does he have, AGP or PCI-Express? Apparently you cannot use ddr2 ram and agp on the few boards that have agp and pci-express slots. So tiy will need to use a pci-express video card.

I've never heard of an exclusion between AGP/PCIe and DDR/DDR2 on any of the supported boards.

Please note, motherboards can be very picky when it comes to ram. Check the mobo manufacturers site to make sure the ram he has is compatible with the board you buy.
