so I am buildng a PC out of the parts I have laying around, and I can't decide what memory to use. The mobo is a system pull that has the Intel 865g chipset, so it supports dual channel RAM. I have two 256mb PC2700 sticks or two 512mb PC2100 sticks. So should I go with a gig of the slower RAM or 512 of the slightly faster RAM. Eventually I want to buy some faster RAM, but I have this now so it's free.

What will you be doing with this computer? if its going to be used for games and the such go with the 512 of the faster RAM. If your going to use it for programs, such as Adobe Photoshop, or any other rendering program or whatever, then go with the 1 gig.

I'm always in favor of more memory....but without reading your mind to see what processor is going in there, it's tough to say. The 865s support bus speeds of 400, 533, and 800, so we can't even begin to guess.

well, the processor is from the same system pull. It is a 2.66 according to the config code on the pc. It came from a Compaq EVO d530. As for the usage, I will be playing battlefield vietnam, UT2004, and Far Cry on it. Half Life 2 and Doom 3 when they come out. I will also be doing some light web design on it, so it will be running some graphics apps and dreamweaver (yes I cheat).

2.66 is a "B" processor, 533 mhZ FSB. I'd go with a gig of pc2100 unless you'll be overclocking it. And even at that, I'd rather have a gig of ram and a stock processor than half a gig and a slightly faster processor. So..... A gig is my vote.

And yes, notepad > * :D

*ahem*

I'd just take the 1GB of RAM, period. A 2.66GHz P4 at stock speed with 1GB of RAM, or even kicked up a little bit and running async, will be plenty fast. And a good many games now seem to like having 1GB over 0.5GB.

that was what I was thinking. It was hard for me to believe that the slight ram speed difference would make as much of an impact as doubling the ram. I actually might go with 2gb or pc2100, just because I have it.

yeah i would go with the gig too. if you are going to be playing those large games, you're going to want the extra memory. When I play games, my memory frequently goes above 512mb of usage.
