I think I wont wait for the Dual Layer or Blue Laser technology, and dive into it now.

Right now I've got a few choices though:

LiteOn LDW-451S DVD+/-RW RETAIL BOX $115
LiteOn LDW-811S 8X DVD+/-RW $140
LiteOn LDW-851S 8X DVD+/-RW OEM $131
LiteOn SOHW-812S 8x 4x / 8x 4x + 40x24x40x RETAIL BOX $165

What's the differences between the 3 8x burners? They're CDN Prices, so calm down :)

Hey.
1) The 811S and 851S are the same drive. They have the same chipset, which gives them 8X +R and 4X -R speeds, but the Pickup Head (PUH) on the 851S is different, so they have different firmware.

2)The 812S has a newer chipset, supports 8X -R and 4X -Speeds.

I'd recommend... neither of these drives. Go for the NEC2500A or the Pioneer 107D, they are both based on a new chipset that also supports 8X -R and 4X -RW burning. Writing quality on them is better than on the Lite-0ns, as is media compatibility.

I have never heard good things about NEC... though it's about as cheap as the others. Can I get a second opinion? Thanks.

The NEC 2500A is a really good DVD burner. It burns about the best DVD as far as image quality goes. NEC burners are usually really good like LiteOn's. The LiteOn also comes highly recommeneded. It burns faster then the NEC and is a better CD burner.

Both are recommended on CD Freaks so i would check there for more information on them both. Personally i'm going with the LiteOn 8x burner because i'm such a big LiteOn fan and people have had really good luck with it.

I have the Lite-On 811S and it worked great on the one Data DVD I burned. Took 12 mninutes to burn 4.3gigs over the network.
It works great as a CD-R drive as well, burned a dozen or so on it already.

851>811 generally, but you may lose the ability to burn at 8X with certain discs that burn at 8X in the 811S. They will only burn at 4X in the 851SW, unless you try some hacked firmwares.

That would be an issue *if* you are that worried about speed.

I have the 4X Lite-On (the LVD-411S) and it is *simply flawless*. I'm burning *repeatedly* to not just DVD+RW media, but the same DVD+RW *disk* (one that came with the drive).

It has *absolutely train-wrecked* every idea I had about DVD burners (I've also used it as a second CD burner); in fact, it's actually a bit more reliable than my *CD burner* at CD burning tasks (could it be because it supports SmartBurn, while my straight CD burner uses ExactLink?).

I use Nero (6.3.1.6) for all tasks.

I have a 411S--->811S via some firmware manipulation, and it rocks. I really wouldn't mind having the 8X -R burn the newer drives have but there are 16X drives on the horizon and media is still a pain to find, so I am not fretting.

I did the same thing, and it works flawlessly.
