I am still a linux noob but I have noticed that Simply Mepis (debian based) seems to be a good one to start off with download here and gentoo is probably the most advanced.

I have spent a lot of time installing different distros, so I feel that is somewhat accurate.

Someone once made a post that installing gentoo, which is text-based, is a good way to learn the linux commands. I agree because I came out smarter than what I went in with.
 
A note about Gentoo......

I agree that you'll come out smarter, but Gentoo has a very differant set of tools then other distrobutions. So when your done, you'll know more about Gentoo, but not really anything else...Yes it will show you alot about the file structure of Linux in general, and several other things.... But just becouse you may become fluent with Gentoo, doesn't mean that you'll also become fluent with other distro's...

Having said that, I use Gentoo.... FOR its tools.... Specifically Portage.....

If your a Windows convert, you may want to try a LiveCD distro first.....Like Knoppix, then try another distro...Like Mepis or Fedora Core, then try Gentoo....

Doing it this way will allow you to get a better feel for varios distrobutions rather than just gentoo, also it will give you a greater respect for portage.....
 
I started out with Mandrake (now Mandriva Linux)

other good ones: Fedora Core 3, SuSe linux.
 
Ubuntu is a great distro, they ship for free a live version and a installable one in the same pack :D

The thing with advanced linux use is that you can tweak/hack/threaten any distro into acting as you want it to. It's mostly a case of finding the one that requires the least amount of change to get it to work in a way you like. (Incidentally, this might be why several of the distros you see recommended for "expert use" appear to do less for you than the "beginner" distros. Less pre-setup means less to remove and rebuild.)


Oh, and least I forget: FreeBSD is kind of nice. :D
 
imo, hhunt hit the nail on the head. i get so irritated at the things i have to undo with fedora/rhes that i want to pull my hairs out whenever i have to use it.

on the flip side, i concede that it is a convenient thing to be able to plug in a digicam/flash drive/etc and have it behave as windows would and mount the drive or pop up a window saying "do you want to download these pictures now?" until knowing how to work with it, i think linux would be frustrating for people who are looking for a desktop replacement and these automated distros would ease the frustrations.



i <3 slackware, but for those wanting for a desktop replacement w/o a lot of fuss or the temptation to go back to windows because something doesn't "just work", i think that fedora, mandrake and possibly suse (haven't used myself, but i know a couple of non-linux users who got up and running with it) would be good.

i would stick with a "bigger" distro because more support via user lists and such will be available than if you use a lesser-known distro.
 
Im also still beginner in Linux, so far I've used both SuSE and Ubuntu, I'd have to say I like ubuntu more because its kinda forced me a little more to get used to the command line, which has helped me learn alot, SuSE is good and very easy to use, but I didnt find myself learning all that much about the platform. All in all im pretty happy with Ubuntu right now (running the powerpc build on my ibook) Took a good deal of tweaking to get everything working smoothly, but I enjoyed the learning process, as it wasnt super steep.
 
i'd say go with mepis. i liked it because it was very graphical, so the steep learning curve from coming from windows wasnt as bad. plus you could still use things from a command prompt if wanted to. ive tried arch, mandrake, redhat, fedora, and slack, and mepis is the only distro that i got to work properly (somewhat). i got my ssh and dhcp server running, and actually got it to join a win2k domain (still trying to authorize it in ads, but i dont think that's possible)

apt with synaptic is great because you can see all the programs u have installed in a nice gui view ,kinda like add/remove programs in windows. once i get more comfortable with it, im gonna switch to debian so that i can get less gui dependant distro so i can learn better

imo, redhat, mandrake, and fedora suckssssssssssssssssss, but thats just me.
