I have been researching for a better part of 5 months...initially wanting standard 4:3 LCD, than deciding widescreen 16:9, and now I'm thinking of getting a standard LCD again...but help me decide!

Now I play games like BF2, CS Source, Oblivion, various RTS games. And I watch alot of DVDs. I figured widescreen would be good since its wider and good for watching widescreen dvds...however once i got my widescreen notebook i found the wide viewing okay but still many games don't support widescreen natively and dvds still have letterbox for widescreen, and centered for 4:3 dvds. This rig will be for doing some adobe creative suite work such as photoshop, maybe some video editting, but primarly GAMING and DVD/Video viewing. The rig I'm building: nzxt lexa with ultra X-2 550W Modular PSU, eVGA 7900GT KO, X-FI Sound Card, a seagate barricuda 7200.1 drive, etc etc. undecided mobo and memory.

On to the viewsonic LCDs I've been looking at, under 21'inch is a must since I will be using it in a college dorm room where space may likely be limited->
two 4:3 and two widescreen lcs:

Of these what do you think is my best choice a 2MS 4:3 19inch which is great for gaming and probally fine for dvds too...or I widescreen which could play certain games like Oblivion in native ws or hack games to make it support ws res. What are your views on Standard LCDs vs WS LCDS? And which one to get...I'm going to be ordering one soon. Thanks!!

Anyone else? I'm not sure if I can justify the more expensive 8ms widescreen versus the 2ms norm lcd.... Any comments / opinions guys?

I've used a nice 1680x1050 laptop for a month and now I have replaced it with a lighter 1440×900 laptop. So I am familar with these resolutions...but not sure if it should go with a 2ms lcd for gaming or a widescreen for its productivity.

Thanks!

Widescreen. I'd recommend the Dell 2007WFP. It is on sale on Dell's website right now. 90 bucks off the standard price.

Those fast panels have garbage color reproduction. The 2007WFP is a S-IPS panel, 8 bits, so all 16.7 million colors can be produced. Has fantastic viewing angles, good brightness and contrast, minimal backlight bleeding. Although it is rated as a 16ms panel, I have seen absolutely no ghosting in DVDs, or while playing NFS:MW, CS 1.6, CS:Source, HL2:Ep 1, and other games. (response time ratings are a joke anyways, seeing as there isn't a standard way to define response time). This monitor has been rated on behardware's website as being on part with some 6ms response time panels, so that shows you right there.

Not to mention that it is HDCP compliant, has an adjustable stand, comes with a 4 port USB hub, s-video input and composite input, all things the viewsonic 20" widescreen does not

There are quite a few games that support 1680x1050, now, too. All source games do, WoW does...BF2 doesn't but it is rumored that it will. And with the Dell 2007WFP, if you need to play at a 4x3 resolution, it has the ability to display black bars on the sides to give you the correct aspect ratio. I dont think the viewsonic can do this either..

I just got my Samsung 204b from newegg a few days ago and I love it. The only game I've played on it so far is Prey, but I haven't seen any ghosting. There is minimal backlight bleed at the top and bottom if the screen is solid black, like the default XP screen saver, but I've never noticed it in game or while web browsing.
