So my wife and I have 3 laptops.
-Wife's Sony i3-based
-My i7-quad-based Sony laptop
-My Acer dual-core AMD netbook
I travel a lot for work, and have been going back to school, so I bought the i7 to get me through the duration of school. However, a while back I bought the Acer and have been using it. It is tiny in comparison, and does basically what I need it to do. I upgraded my desktop, and since then have not been using my Sony laptop at all. I have also run into schedule conflicts between school and work that I don't think will be resolved anytime soon. Even so, the Acer has worked for classes I've had (Mathlab, etc). It runs Office, Visual Studio, Microsoft Math, etc fine (just slow to start). The small size and cheap replacement cost if destroyed makes it more enjoyable to travel with.
My wife's computer needs a rebuild due to software issues. So, I've been thinking about giving her my i7 and just selling her i3. Her i3 is dreadfully slow to me, but it does what she needs (internet, also college classes, office, etc).
My dilemma is that for the purchase price, I will likely lose a significantly higher percentage on the i7, maybe even 50%, as compared to selling the wife's i3 laptop. It just seems like a bigger loss, and that I should keep the fancier laptop so I don't "realize" that loss. But, the i3 does what my wife needs it to, and I should be able to get more out of the i7, so I dunno.
I admit, for some unknown reason, I kind of want to keep the i7 (as in, I'll need it as soon as I get rid of it). I've been looking into getting some CAD training through work, which may or may not need a better laptop. But, when I upgraded my desktop I didn't upgrade the video card. It's now starting to artifact and so forth, and I'm expecting it to croak soon (a 4870). I'd also like to get a SSD, so those are kind of driving my desire to sell. I bought way more laptop than I needed, as I should have bought a $800 i5 or something at the time.
