Ok, so I installed a new cpu in my girlfriend's computer tonight. She has an asus A7N8X deluxe motherboard. The chip I put in was an athlon XP 3000 with the 400mhz fsb. Just thought, I would give her system a little extra oomph for her birthday. But anyway, I hooked everything back up and I had no screen. The bios doesn't even show up. So I am thinking either the cpu is bad, or the video card is bad. The video card is an asus radeon 9600, so it is kinda sorta old. I just thought that it was weird that the bios didn't even come up on the screen, I would think that even if the mobo didn't support that cpu, the bios would still come show up, but give an error. So i am thinking that its the vid card. what do you guys think?
 
Do you still have the old CPU? Putting that back in should tell you pretty quick whether that's the problem or not. If you've got another card you can throw in (or if it's got onboard video) that'll help diagnose the problem too.

Failing that... If you're not even making it to the BIOS post, I think your options are limited to hitting the CMOS reset (a jumper or button somewhere on your mobo - check the manual). As far as I know that can't do any harm in either case, but I'd wait for someone to back me up on that before you try it...

EDIT: You might also be on to something regarding compatibility with the new CPU. If you can get it to run again with the old one, a BIOS update would probably fix that (manufacturer's website should have updates and instructions).
 
Take the battery out of the motherboard for a few seconds and pop it back in, unless there is a 3 pin with a 2 pin cap on it near the battery, if there is switch the cap to the other pins and back again like this:

this will clear the cmos - when changing hardware computers often will not boot until after a CMOS reset.

If this doesnt work come back and we'll see what else we can troubleshoot

I already reset the bios by taking out the battery, but it did nothing. changing the vid card and cpu comes tomorrow. I just wanted to see what you guys thought.
 
Wut revision is the mobo? I still have that mobo laying around and I know that the older rev's (1.3 and less?) do not offically support 400FSB CPU's out of the box. The latest bios should help you though. Check that out.
 
its bios is good, I am thinking I need to move a jumper to allow 400fsb or something of that nature.
 
I think you had to have rev 2.0 to have 200 bus stable. Mine was a 1.3 and it wouldn't do it at all.

Why the video card? When it was working before?
 
its not the vid card, I put the old cpu back in and its running fine. And it should be able to run the cpu just fine, the ram is running 400mhz fsb. I am thinking that I need to put a jumper in somewhere to tell it to run the cpu at 400mhz or change it in the bios.

If I remember correctly, the memory on those boards often ran at different speeds than the FSB of the CPU. Mine would do 200MHz RAM but not FSB. What revision is the board?

No, I think they had a new revision of the northbridge between 1.3 and 2.0.

Actually, after visiting Asus's website, 400 MHz CPUs were supported 1.04 and after.

You need bios version 1010 and revision 2.0 but,do not hold my feet to the fire on the revision number
 
could not find a bios update for your motherboard on the asus website.I believe that motherboard has been discontinued.
 
I found it a couple of weeks ago, her bios will support it, but I need to see what revision it is.
 
I am pretty sure it is revision 2.0, thats what a little white sticker said anyways.
