I've been looking at some LCDs and I have a question:

Which response time set is going to be the best?

(total): rise + fall
25 ms: 15 + 10
" : 10 + 15
" : 9 + 16
" : 16 + 9
" : 20 + 5
" : 5 + 20

I would assume that it would be better to have a short fall time than a short rise time. Is this assumption correct? What would the optimal ratio be? I just did this for a 25 ms panel, but the same thing applies for a 16 ms panel. I have seen several 16 ms panels that look like slop compared to 25 ms panels, I assumed it was due to the ratio being shitty in the 16 ms panel.

Anybody have any information to share on this?

Gee, if it was only that simple then you actually could pick a monitor on specs alone. If there is to be a real spec sheet then I think it needs to include all the info.

Combined rise and fall is what we actually see, but as a rule that spec is for black to white. At the moment that’s the spec we see most, at least from the honest companies. Some companies actually give you true total time, the time it takes to go from red to blue to green to white and back to black (off). I think this in part explains why some .25 ms models appear to have fewer artifacts. That explanation came from a combination of talking to factory people from Sony, Samsung and AOC.

The other factors that count are what are behind the panel, as in the OP AMPS that turn things off and on, scaling chips etc. Even though many companies share a panel those other factors can and do seem to play a big roll in what we see as the end product.

It’s still a look before you buy situation ;)
