I'm building a non overclocked rig for a friend and am having the standard AMD versus Intel dilema. I would choose FX-55 but need to order within 48 hours and they are not easy to come by near me at this time.
The rig will be an all purpose machine used with gaming (amd?) and ripping of DVD/CD (intel?) as the most intensive tasks. In the future he may like to edit some video but that is a minor function.

I'm leaing towards suggesting the Intel platform but it is £100 more expensive. Any thoughts appreciated.
 
For games, AMD all the way. Are you ordering online or picking them up from a shop? If mail order, check out overclockers.co.uk - they have a wide variety of X800 and X850 models in PCI-e in stock at the moment, including an X850XT for £330. X850XTPEs as well if your friend will stretch.

Also check out lowestonweb.com - they claim to have a whole load of FX-55s arriving in stock tomorrow. Their prices usually are the cheapest around as well, though obviously they aren't giving them away (£580, but if your friend has the money, get him the best).
 
I've had bad experiences from OcUK in the past and would not use them again. They seem to have a funny definition for "In Stock" and their customer service leaves much to be desired!

I was going to pick up the stuff from Scan and Micro Direct in Manchester.

Thanks for Lowest tip. They are owned by Evesham and I trust them.

Really want to build this weekend but he may wait if an FX55 is available really soon.
 
id get the amd system...

i think the a64 system will perform better, and this is coming from an intel guy :D
