Which is right? Software temp or Hardware Temp?

I installed an Aerogate II fan controller in my rig and for the time being I have the cpu sensor Scotch Taped to the side of the HSF. It reads 38.5 celcius but my software monitor for my Asus P4P800 mobo reads 30 celcius. Which of these is accurrate? I would think if anything the outside of the HSF would be cooler then the chip. THanks

If the sensor is on the side of your HSF, its telling you the temp of your Heatsink and not your CPU.

It is not giving you your true CPU temp.

The Software is probably right if it is reading your CPU diode temp or socket.

Generally speaking, if your heatsink is one temp, the cpu has to be the same or hotter... i think?

Either way, dont trust the onboard reader, trust the cpu diode if you have one.

What's the difference between a CPU Diode and an oboard reader? I have an asus program which came with the motherboard that if giving me the lower temp. I dont know which category that would fall under

i think everyone is clueless now so noone is replying. but i have an asus probe program too and my readings in asus probe is usually higher than the ones i get from my LCD display that came with my koolance case. the temperature sensor for the koolance is on the underside of the waterblock. for example i got 31C on asus probe but i get 28C on the LCD reading on the case. so i dunno what the deal is with the sensor that you bought with the fan controller.
but FYI i wouldn't trust those sensors cuz my friend's got an athlon with a fan controller sensor and it says his temp is at 55C  when idle.....they seem to be a little on the high side to me:confused:
