I'm currently building a new gaming rig, and I have two hd options:

A. One 150gb raptor (os, games) and a single 500gb drive for everything else + backups.

or

B. Three 500gb drives and raid 5 them.


Which would be better/faster? It's gonna be used almost 100% for games, but I do like the idea of the raid system just for the data security.


Any thoughts on what I should pick?
 
A) is a better idea. Raid 5 will be very slow to boot from and play games from.

 
Choice A, games are more random access patterns usually than they are linear transfers, the raptor will give better overall system performance and feel.

Raid 5 is for uptime not security.
 
B.

The extra 1TB is worth it. Your load times will be slightly longer then with the raptor, but you will have more space and your FPS will be the same either way.
 
There's only an extra 350GB with option B. And raid 5 means a lot slower application-level performance - updating parity is expensive latency-wise.

 
Oops, I guess I'm a little slow today. If it's a 350 mb difference, definately A unless you have critical files on the system.
