Which is faster - S3 Trio3d/2X or NVIDIA TNT2-64?

Subject sez it all,

got a oldish computer Im looking at atm, and Im wondering out of the two cards mentioned which is faster - Im guessing the NVidia chip one?

The TNT2 will slaughter the S3 Trio3D before the latter has rendered its first frame.
 
Hey now I remember when my TNT2 Ultra was the best card on the block :)

As a matter of fact I'm running it right now while my Gainward card has ^%(#@%_@ off :)

wasnt the big deal with the ultra that it was better than the voodoo lines?

i know the other tnt2s couldnt compare and neither could the later introduced gimped m64
 
tnt2 is faster

if i remember correctly, the whole tnt2, voodoo, matrox battle went like this...

voodoo for the raw speed and high fps.
tnt2 for good speed and better image quality than the voodoo.
matrox for best image quality.

Sounds right to me - the TNTs were the first chips to support 32bit right?

yup, 3dfx came out with some patch to allow 24bit colors on the voodoo but im not 100% sure on that.

It was "22-bit" color that was dithered by a post filter in the RAMDAC (Voodoo3). The reason I put 22-bit in quotes is because the framebuffer source was 16-bit (chip had 32-bit internal precision, 16-bit output).

IMO, it looked terrible with distinct banding and also with no sharpness -- the worst of both worlds, but better looking than the plain 16-bit Voodoo2.

The G400Max series was a pretty close match to the TNT2 Ultras once all the driver bugs where worked out.
 
Does anyone remember the big argument from the 3dfx fanatics that 32bit would barely be used in gaming, and that the difference in image quality from 16bit to 32bit was not noticeable? :)
 
The TNT2 will take the S3 Trio3D, roll it into a big joint, and kill it in a single hit. :D
