Which is correct? CPU-Z or Core Temp?

I hate to ask a question thats been sorta asked before, but the search didn't really reveal an answer to my question.

I just got my E8400 and installed it. The BIOS tells me its running at 3.0ghz. My cpu is reading 3.0 ghz in the system properties. Core Temp says its running at 3.0ghz with (428.58 * 7). But CPU-Z is giving me a reading of 2333 (333 * 7). Which one is correct. I wanted to begin overclocking, but I'm more than sure I should get this right before moving on to anything more serious.

cpu-z ASSUMES a stock multiplier....if you have changed that, it does not report correctly.

Trust the BIOS......

Your E8400 at stock should be 333 x 9 = 3.0Ghz (2.98-3.01 actual). CoreTemp is reporting the right speed, but the wrong multiplier and FSB speed. CPUz is reporting the right FSB, but the wrong multiplier and speed. Check your BIOS and make sure EIST, C1E etc are all turned off. Then recheck those two.

But as the previous poster said, the BIOS is almost always correct.

Hmmm. I checked the BIOS again. I looked at it wrong the first time. It actually reads (334 * 7) = 2338. This is at default. Shouldn't my defaults be higher than that? I mean, I can manually go in and adjust it, but it seems like I would be trying to manually set my defaults. Could I be missing a setting on my board?

check the setting the changes the multiplier (CPU multi, FSB multi, etc), it should be either Auto or 9.

The setting is set to auto. And then under that it says Adjust CPU Ratio which says 7.

Yeah. I see where I went wrong. I was assuming that since it was set to auto, it wouldnt let me adjust the multiplier...which it didn't. So I set it to manual which then brought up the options to change the FSB and memory frequency, but I didn't touch those. I just adjusted the multiplier and then set it back to auto and the multiplier stayed at 9. Now its reading (335 * 9) so I'm content for the time being.
