I made a thread earlier asking for opinions on 2.1 speakers. I have finally narrowed it down to 2.....

  • Product Description: Logitech Z 2300 - PC multimedia speaker system
  • Product Type: PC multimedia speaker system

These was chosen because...

- I have no space for 5.1 or 7.1 speakers
- My budget is £100 maximum, no way am I paying more!

Which is better and why? They are virtually the same price

i would go with the Logitech Z 2300..its twice as powerful...and u cant go wrong with logitech they normally carry quality products.

Oh really? Does anyone agree with this? If thats the case, I'd rather have better sound. How did you come to this conclusion? Is it to do with the Media Included Qty?

Which out of the 2 would you choose Joey?

This is because the Logitechs have no tweeter at all whatsoever in their satellites -- they have just a single midrange speaker in the satellites. So, some of the high frequencies will be missing when listening to the Logitechs.

On the other hand, the Altecs don't have as powerful of a bass module as the Logitechs.

The reason Altecs MAY sound better is that they have a dedicated tweeter, so you get cleaner highs, and 2 mid-frequency drivers per satellite, which lets them go louder w/o distorting mid freqs as much. Logi has to handle everything but bass with a single driver. Also, Altecs are taller, which puts tweeters closer to your ears if you put them on the desk, possibly creating better soundstage.

On the other hand, drivers cost money too. It's possible that as much budget was allocated to each 1-driver Logi satellite as to a 3-driver Altec sat, with obvious effect on quality. But from what I read (and I was eyeing the Altecs about 1.5 yrs ago) their sound quality is indeed slightly better than Logi. Unless you want very loud bass (note I didn't say GOOD bass ;) ) Go with altecs. Plus, they look much sexier.

i was wondering if you have to switch the power on/off in the back sub everytime you want to listen to music or can i just keep it on all the time and just use the master power/stand by button on the remote..

logitech z-2300

Then I will most probably get the Altec Lansings then from what people have said. Thanks everyone, I will order these in the next couple of weeks!

I want to say ... (semi blindly) to go for the Antecs! I'm pretty sure I liked em last time I heard em' at Fry's (months ago) Nice smooth deep bass, not annoying thumping cardboard sub-box bass.

This figure means absolutely nothing. All channels driven or one channel driven? Source material? 20-20kHz or 120-600Hz? Total harmonic distortion? .5% or 10%...or 30%?

Without these qualifiers, the relevancy of power ratings is absolutely nill.

I'm late to this discussion, but concur with the majority... go for that Altec system. I've heard it and think you'll be pleased.

For the record, I think the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 is the best in this category.

What will you be primarily doing with these speakers? Music, movies, games?

I havn't had any experience with any of Altec Lansing new speakers, but a long time ago I invested in some Altec Lansing ATP3 speakers. They lack a bit in the bass area, but the highs are pretty good. If you are primarily listening to music... give them a try and let us know how they are.

I own the Logitech Z-2300s and they lack mids and highs. Relatively speaking, they're not the best choice for listening to music (guess it also depends on what kind of music you're into). They have ALOT of ground shaking oomph in them which are very enjoyable in games, however!

Do you mean the Klipsch Promedia GMX A-2.1?

I will primary be using it for gaming but I do listen to the odd mp3 and I will be watching movies and tv shows on the PC from time to time. I no longer consider the Z-2300 as a suitable option lol

The ProMedia 2.1, from what I heard is slightly better than both of these speakers but they are very hard to find on the internet (I am in UK), I dont like the look of the speakers and they are a little on the small side.

I am going to go with the Altec, I am almost certain I will get these.
