Which Intel Rig?

Much to my shame I'm well off the pace these days with what's around, not having built a new rig for a few years. So when my bud asked me which of these to get i wasn't sure

I'd have probably advised the E6300 one but best to double check:

get the E6300 or even just the E4300 instead of that pentium D

wait..!!!!
intergrated video???? ( editedd.... both system use intergrated video.. the system 2 's 7100GS.. is it a stand alone card with turbo cache???.. i think that is why it said .. upto 512mb.. which means it may have 64mb onboard memory and you can use your system 's memory for more up to 512mb total... not any better then a real intergrated video chip anyway)
so this is not for gamess right?
just for internet? and word processing?
then go for the cheaper one
or even get a 60 dollars pentium 3 system with winxp from a second hand shop ( should include monitor too)

if he want to play games inthe future..
make sure , the system 's mainboard come with a PCI-e slot. for video upgrade
if not he will have to upgrade once again.. / buy a new rig again

core 2 duo of course. swap it out for some decent graphics and another gig of ram

There'll be no gaming, he is going to use it for music production and he intends sticking more RAM in.

In this case is the integrated video going to be that big a drawback between the Core 2 Duo and the Pentium D i.e. level the field a bit?

and he just need the system for music.
mm the video card is not important..
then he better put in more memory atleast min 2gb
a good sound card is inportant.
by the way .. i will recommand window XP instead..
and then get a sound blaster XiFi sound card.

window vista doesn't let the sound card do harddrive encode anymore..
need some other to confirm that..

but atleast many of my games have no more EAX/ 3d sound anymore.

I don't know the type of music he'll be producing, but I'd recommend another hard drive (250gb-500gb if it's large raw files or lots of projects).

If he needs inputs, start looking for Sound Blasters that offer a front-of-case control panel like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16829102181

Integrated video chip won't have much effect on sound, but I highly recommend c2d as a faster machine will cut down processing time (ie: converting). Just make sure you have a good sound card.

Iono about you, but I'm enjoying my Battlefield 2 with EAX on a Logitech 5.1 SRS.
