Which "inexpensive" Sennheisers should I get?

I was thinking of getting the HD500s for a few reasons. I wore those once and it had incredible sound, and it actually had bass. But I've also heard a few people say they suck and that HD497s are better. The thing is I only have like $60 for some new headphones, a couple places have the HD500 for $54 and I've seen the HD497 for less. But I'm not sure which one is really better. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
 
I say HD497. I am upgrading from my HD202 to an HD497. If you want to save some more money, the HD202 is pretty good, especially for around $35 bucks or so.
 
Is the bass on the 497's good? Because the bass on the HD500's is quite good.

Edit: I guess "awsome" wasn't quite the word I was looking for.
 
I own HD497s and I think their sound quality is quite good across the board. Now whether they're better than the HD500s, I cannot say since I've never tried them, but (imho) the HD497s won't disappoint you.
 
That so-called "awesome" bass on the HD500's is actually bloated, muddy, unmusical, one-noted bass that almost completely overpowers what little midrange and treble that those headphones deliver.

Well I guess it's just the fact that I've used crappy head phones for quite some times. It may not be "awsome" bass but it's was a lot better than most headphones I have listened to. Considering that was the only pair of decent headphones I've heard in a long time.

The 500s are certainly better than a lot cheep phones....and they have a unique sound. What was said about em...I have to agree with, however. They're not in the same league as the more expensive senns in my experience and while they have a bit more 'punch' than the 497s, the 497's are closer in sound to, say, my HD580s. just....less so (?)

497's are superior cans IMO.
