i cant decide which one to go with. can you guys help me?

a few things:

1. im trying to keep the price under 220. i dont want to go higher

2. im willing to get any of them as long as they just run the games right

3. i never ever ever ever ever overclock and never will.

i know i forgot something here but i dont know which. if you need more info ask

Do you have a microcenter nearby?
I assume you have a LGA 1155 motherboard?

There isn't much of a price difference between sandy bridge and ivy bridge so I'd go with the 3rd gen ivy bridge.

Since you not going to overclock, I'd just pick the fastest one within your budget, even though your not overclocking I'd still recommend picking up the i5-3570k, it will hold its resale value better and is only $5-8 more than the i5-3570, especially if your near a microcenter.

$214.99 - Intel Core i5-3570 Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost)

$223.99 - i5-3570k @ amazon

$219.99 - i5-3570k @ tigerdirect
$189.99 - i5-3570k @ microcenter

Although

nah, no microcenters even in my state sorry.

i do have tiger direct near me though. its only 5 minutes to drive.

is a non k 3570 good enough? people are insisting i buy that but i hate overclocking and thats the only reason they can give me.

i5-3570k will hold its value better than the 3570

If you ever need to use the IGP
3570 = Intel HD Graphics 2500
3570k = Intel HD Graphics 4000

The HD 4000 will "run" WOW or GW2 and be playable at lower resolutions.
Or for example I'm running 3 screen off my 7970 and then a HD TV off my 3570k so I can watch movies while gaming :)

For a $5 difference I'd get the 3570k, there is nothing to say you have to overclock the cpu.

+1 to m715

I would be willing to bet that most of the Intel® Core™ i5-3570K that we have sold will not be overclocked. While it does have that ability for a lot of us we simply won't need it. I think that the reason so many people promote the Intel Core i5-3570K is because it has so much room down the line to overclock but people seem to forget how good the other Intel Core i5's are in thier own right. Heck Tom's thought that the Intel Core i5-3350P (without the IGP) was a heck of a processor and it can't be overclocked.

Just keep looking for i5-3570K sales. You can get one for $205-220 shipped.

Having the stonger IGP is a plus in case you need to revert to it if something happens to your dedicated GPU.

That, and OC'ing capability typically means a bit longer usable life.

Why not just keep a spare video card on hand? It will keep dust from mucking up your PCI-E slot in the meantime.

Why spend the money for a spare video card that will take up room sitting on the shelf waiting for a "just in case" scenario when there's a perfectly good one built in to the CPU?

I can see both sides of this argument... with the somewhat capable IGP's we have nowadays, the need to have a spare GPU on hand becomes less and less. All comes down to personal preference.

I did that for quite some time, I had a couple of entry line cards for testing purposes. But I'm down-sizing the amount of computer parts I have so I recently sold them off, with the 3570k I figure I can use the IGP...

On top of that better airflow and less clutter in the case. How about power draw? Can you completely shutdown a PCIe slot from power consumption if not in use?

Why not OC? I don't think Ivy Bridge is hard at all to OC. You can even do it in Windows with app. It's completely dumbed down compared to OCing a 1st gen i7 for example.

Because the temps might get scary on overclocked Ivy.

It's not at all scary for me. This chip was designed to work at up to 105C. After that it will throttle to protect itself.

As long as you don't bump up voltage, temps won't get scary.

i dont like overclocking my hardware because of a very bad experience a while ago. and im trying to keep my pc budget under 250 because i need a hard drive too

You should strongly consider an AMD A10 or A8 setup if you're that low on budget.

Up your budget just a little and you can get the xeon equivalent (e3-1230 v2) for $240....
4 cores, 8 threads.....

Save up some more. Get the 3570k with a good cheap cooler like the Hyper 212+. Overclock it to 4.2-4.4 ghz. Overclocking on SB and IB processors is significantly easier than previous generations, and a lot less risky as well.

Are you using a dedicated GPU?

Assuming your on 1155 socket...
If so, I'd even recommend a i5 2500k or 2400. They go for about 100-140 on the forums if your trying to save money.
Otherwise, just get the 3570 without the k to save money if your not overclocking

If you are using the iGPU, get a 3570k... itll serve you a lot better than the 2500mhd

next person to say overclock i will create a pc tech that allows me to slap people over the internet.

...

Because of one bad experience with hardware that is vastly different from today's hardware?

You do realize that the Turbo technology found in all modern CPUs is a form of overclocking, right?

How about next time a person comes to [H]forums and wants help on getting best CPU for them, yet totally dismisses willingness to overclock, even a CPU that was DESIGNED to be overclocked, will get a slap over the Internet....

Just sayin...

do it for me i will pay you

and thanks mr celery i will go with the non k unless my budget allows for a k

This. Might as well write off all hamburgers after you get a stomach ache one day after lunch.

The OP is beyond help if he justifies getting a non-K just because it CAN'T overclock, instead of getting the one which CAN overclock and NOT OVERCLOCKING, BECAUSE YOU DO NOT HAVE TO!

The benefits of the K have been laid out as follows, and yet OP does not seem to know how to read:

Much more value in case of resale,
Incredibly better integrated graphics,
Any non-K, unless you get a super deal on it, is a complete waste of money considering its price difference compared to K equivalent for the simple fact that you're paying $5-20 less for getting jipped on a helluva lot of futureproofing

Please stop making yourself sound like a 12 year old trying to build a PC with a youtube video.

All you have to do to overclock these Intel CPU's nowadays is to increase the multiplier to 42x (4.2GHz) and leave the voltage alone at auto. There is absolutely no risk involved and there are significant performance gains to be had overclocking your processor that can sometimes make up for other deficiencies in your computer.

my motherboard also sucks for overclocking. but i plan to buy a z77 in 2 months time. i might be able to afford the K since im selling my other components. i was skimping out mostly because i wanted a new hard drive as well.

Screw hard drives, get a SSD :p

no k's have vt-d. Some do. I prefer more functionality than speed I won't use anyhow.

Well, OP was earlier complaining that the A10s sucked, so I assume he wants/needs more speed. And probably isn't doing anything that requires VT-D.

[H]OCP stands for Hardware Overclockers' Comparison Page. Exactly the place you want to come asking for 1337 CPU advice when you refuse to overclock. Good luck with those stock multis, dude.

/sarcasm

OK, that was warranted, but I don't mean to be an ass all day. There's no reason to get a K chip if you're not overclocking. Just get the cheaper model and save some $$$. And I don't know how long a "while ago" was, or what kind of "bad experience" you had back then, but overclocking these SB/IB chips to a moderate degree is simple and risk free.

What in particular sucks about it?

You might consider even an i3 if you're on a budget. What games do you like to play?

the amd is my living room computer, it was supposed to be my replacement because i wasnt going to play games on it but around the same time i got back into gaming and then it died on me suddenly. i got it fixed and put it as a living room pc

i currently own a i3 on the pc i am on now and alot of the games i play (borderlands 2, batman ac, bf3) run poorly on it.

Wow... your reasoning is so off...

Did the CPU itself fail, or was it the motherboard? If it was the motherboard, it's either 1. your fault for buying a cheap motherboard, or 2. you just got unlucky. If it was the CPU, you just got extremely unlucky, unless you were doing something wrong.

Saying the A10 is bad just because it died once is just... /facepalm is the only way I can describe it.

And as others have asked, are you running on the iGPU, or are you getting a discrete GPU? Because if it's off of the iGPU, the i5 is going to be worse than the A10.

i dont know what killed it, it just suddenly turned off and wouldnt go back on. i got a replacement luckily.

the a-10 was all i could afford at the time, same with the i3 im on now.

i have 2 discreet video cards. i wouldnt use igpu unless i had a major video card problem. i want this to game on. i dont care for the other things i just want to run the games without hiccups. which is why i dont want something cheap now.
