Out of these ones here, which one would be better:

1. Thermaltake big typhoon
2. Scythe SCNJ-1000 Ninja
3. Tuniq Tower 120 Cooler
4. other (plz specify)

btw, the heatsink will be going on a naked chip.

The one i currently have is an Akasa Evo 33 and ive got 2 fans - one on each side - it looks cool. search it on goole images if you dont know what it looks like

I know the big typhoon and the ninja are pretty close performance-wise. I have a typhoon myself and it dropped my temps 10C from stock, and that is with considerably higher voltage than I was running with the stock cooler. I've heard the ninja has height issues with some cases since it's so tall. I would imagine this comes into play in cases that only have 80mm exhaust fans in the back, and thus tend to be more narrow than the newer cases that support 120mm fans.

If I were choosing between those two, I'd choose whichever I could get cheaper.

my preferance is the ninja but the big typhoon would be best for a naked cpu b/c its mounting method uses screws instead of the clips that the ninja uses

naked? what do you mean? what about a retail opty 170, you mean without the stock fan right? The reason I'm asking is I'll be getting an opty 170 next week and want to order one of the above heatsinks, been looking at the ninja and the typhoon.

hes saying if you remove the ihs, aka heatspreader, the thermaltake big typhoon will work best. If you dont know what it is, TRUST ME, dont worry about it and ignore his post.

For me? Im getting the zalman 9500 due to ease of installation, performance, and looks.

do NOT get the ninja if you are using a naked chip. very good chance of crushing/damaging the cpu because the installation on the ninja sucks.

i recommend the cnps9500 due to ease of installation.
temps between these heatsinks are negligible so i would go for ease of install.

no ihs.... toughy. The installation on a thermalright is not tough at all but without the ihs i would be kinda scared.

Thermalright all the way but i would pick a Zalman screw solution... though it is big and heavy.

You would very likely crush the core if you tried to install a Thermalright heatsink on a CPU without the IHS. You have to apply too much pressure in order to fasten the clips and it doesn't take much to crack a core.

ease of installation? WTF is this, [L]impOCP?

I understand ruling out coolers beucase it might crack the core, but who cares if its a bitch to get on if it works the best?

ease of installation for naked chips. if it wasnt a naked chip then i would recommend the ninja also.
chance of breaking a $300+ chip with a $40 heatsink is just stupid. might as well go for the better heatsink for peace of mind.
but hey, if you wanna be stupid and try a heatsink with a retarded ass rentention mechanism on a delicate core be my guest. i guess only then can you be [H]ard.

did you read the second part of hte post? Sure doesnt sound like it...

im not talking about just naked cores. sounded like a few people were recommending the easiest cooler to intstall regardless of whether it was naked or not.

edit: doh, missed that he said he was going to put it on a naked chip in the OP. thought people were just giving conditionals...

ive never installed a hsf before, and donot want a pain in the ass when i do try...Hence, the zalman 9500 is my choice

I dont see anything [H]ard about a heatsink/fan that is difficult to install. I think ease of installation should play a role in the decision, especially if you swap CPU's out a lot. The retention mechanism on the Thermalright heatsinks are not real difficult to get attached but they are a pain in the ass to remove. Normally it pulls the CPU out of the socket with it when you take it off unless your extremely careful and for me i've pulled them out of the socket more then once and i was careful. Using AS5 makes the CPU stick to the bottom of the heatsink even if you warm it up first. I havn't installed one of the Thermalright heatsinks since i stopped using AS5 and switched to Ceramique though. I dont know if it would still be the same problem as much or not.
