I was gonna go with a Zalman CNPS7000 for Socket 754, but I'm not sure if it'll be good enough if I OC an A64 3000+. Any ideas? I don't want a huge honkin' thing, but I don't wanna risk damaging my CPU because of heat.

I got the same cpu as you do running in my rig. I'm have a Thermaltake Venus 12. It's a very good cooler for athlon 64's! . I would get that if I was you i love it my cpu stays at 35C when not in use or even lower on cool days. And its a great cooler for pepole that wane do some hardcore OCing. Great Cooler I love it! :p

I just bought an A64 3000 with the intention to overclock as high as possible, with minimal noise. Here's what I got:

SVC 80mm to 120mm Fan FA80120-GREEN 1 3.99
Adapter - UV Green

I think I'm gonna try the Venus 12. His temps look pretty sweet.

I'm just running the stock HSF and maintaining CPU temperatures of 32c-34c idle and 36c-38c under load. Does this seem right?? It doesn't to me considering you guys are all running aftermaket cooling and running warmer than I am.

More info: I have ~10 fans in my case and the case temp stays about 82 idle and 89 under load. Other specs in sig...

That seems pretty low, but I sometimes wonder about the accuracy of these temp monitors. My watercooling can barely keep my 3000+ temps at 34C (at 2.5ghz) on my VNF3. When using the same VNF3-250, both my 3000+ and 3200+ with the stock cooler had idle temps of 39C with the 3000+ and 55C with the 3200+ in a 25C room. At 2.4ghz and 1.68v those idle temps skyrocketed to 50C with the 3000+ and over 60 with the 3200+. Prime95 load would add about 10-12C on average.

I just installed the Alpha PAL-8150T with a 80mm YS-Tech adjustable fan and at 2.4ghz I am idle at 35-36C and load at 46C with the 3000+ with Prime95.

you have to remember that diff mobos read diff temps.

also, the Thermalright SLK948u and XP-120 (yes it is a64 compat.) are great choices.

same..

and i know my temps are accurate (well, at least not hotter than it's reading) just by touching my heatsink - it's just a bit warm

Any eveidence? I do like the dBA levels.

Venus 12: Noise(dBA): 21 at 2000 RPM, 48 at 5500 RPM

Hyper 6: Noise(dBA): 19 ~ 24

However, the Hyper 6 is sleeve bearing. And the Venus 12 is $10 cheaper, and begins at 2000 RPM in contrast to the Hyper 6's 1400.

But the one guy stated his temps with his Venus 12, which were quite good. Do you have any temps with the Hyper 6?

That's what I bought with my new system today. After doing quite a bit of research, this cooler with 2 fans in suck/blow will produce amazing results with low noise. The only disadvantage is the noise/weight of the monster. It weighs in at 1 kilo (about 2.2 lbs.) and because of it's height it will not fit in low profile cases.

Here is a review vs. the SP-94.

Here is another review which ranks it better than the Zalman and includes some MP3's of the thing in action.
