Which HD - WD vs Maxtor?

Hi all,

I was just wondering, if I had an option to get one of two hard drives at the same price, which one is better?

1) Western Digital 160GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache

or

2) Maxtor 160GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache

Any suggestions? Thanks.

i've always liked WD myself, not to mention they are great if you ever need to rma the drive.
 
I tried out both brands. Both have been very good to me and haven't had any problems with either one.


I have the exact WD drive that you are looking at that I got on Boxing Day. Works great and no problems with it. Not very loud at all which is nice.

Both are 3-Year warranty.




I think I may have found the Maxtor one for a bit cheaper, so I should definately go for that right? I mean I know many people are suggesting WD, but if it is the same size and speed, but the Maxtor is a little cheaper, shouldn't I go for that? Thanks.

Yeah both of them are great drives. You'll never notice any difference between them. You might want to check techbargains - sometimes you can get hard drives cheaper with MIRs.
 
If it is cheaper, then go with that one.

I got the WD drive for a great deal on Boxing Day. Hard to give that deal up! Got it for $99cdn.
 
don't get maxtor. the company i work for has computers that use them, a hard drive fails on a weekly basis. Even the tech that comes in to replace the hard drives say that maxtor HDs are crap, the reason the company uses them because they are cheaper.
 
i have seen all kinds of drives fail. none of mine personally, makes me wonder. anyway, i do love wd. recently i have purchased a maxtor 120 sata. the only disappointment i have with it is the acoustics of the drive. it is noisy during operation. which is odd since maxtor says whisper quiet fdb motor, but seek some data and it is loud (defeating the purpose it seems).
 
Thanks for all the replies. Man so many conflicting views. I gotta decide by today, cause the sale on the Maxtor drive ends. But if they are as bad as some people in here say, then I don't care that it is on sale, because it is not worth the hassle. On the other hand, if maxtor had problems in the past but are much better now, then I would consider buying it. What to do...

The last western digital I bought (WD1200JB) was noticeably SLOWER than my 4 year old WD400BB. I'm not kidding. It scored about 27k on sandra, vs 29k for my wd400bb.

In contrast, my seagate 160gb scores around 34k if I remember correctly.

The fact that western digital drives are irritatingly loud (ball bearings) and not really impressive in terms of performance, makes me wonder why anyone is still buying them.
 
I just heard about a deal to get a 160GB Maxtor for $35 AR. I guess that means I should go with that.

Don't use SiSoft Sandra to benchmark your drives.

I think you might be wrong about the WD1200JB being slower than your WD400BB

Also, if you look at the leaderboard you'll see that in the 7,200 RPM catagory, before being dethroned by Hitachi, WD had the top spot, the last 3 times. And they have the fastest drive for single user usage in the world - regardless of interface or spindle speed, the 74GB Raptor.
 
Well obviously the raptor owns all :rolleyes: lol

I'm telling you, it was noticeably slower. It wasn't sandra benches that made me notice it was slower, it was all around windows performance that made me notice. Sandra only confirmed it.

I sold that drive a month or two after I bought it.
