Is there any way to tell which hard drive might be going bad, short of removing one and listening for the other? One of my HD's is making the infamous "click and whee" sound every so often. It clicks then basically starts back up basically. It's not happening too frequently yet, but it did happen twice the other day (and hasn't in about 4 days since) so I'm not super worried yet. I have two hd's in though, and I'm not sure which one is getting ready to start dying. I have a replacement hd but I don't want to put it in and have to deal with formatting, setting up my os, reinstalling, etc. if I don't know which drive needs to be replaced. I couldn't think of any way to tell which one it would be short of taking one out and running with the other...however that could be difficult because I'd not only have to hope to be here to hear the sound, but also have to get a second hd prep'd with an os and software.
 
Diagnostic software may catch any errors, but it's doubtful. SMART is only so useful and most OSes only log severe errors on the drives, errors the drives can't cover up/recover from. Click-whees are usually thermal recalibration, not failure. However, if it is spinning down and then spooling back up, you've got problems. Best diagnostic is running each independently and listening.
 
That's what I was afraid of. It only does the 'click-wheez' every so often, and as I said before hasn't done it in about 4 days now. One drive I have in is a 20gig partitioned to two drives, one containing my operating system and the other for storage and general use. If I were to remove my other (80gb) drive it would limit me too much I fear, and I might have to leave the 80 off for some time in order to actually hear the sound. I'd say over the past month, I've heard it maybe 3 or 4 times. Since I built this comp (Feb-Mar?), I've only heard it maybe 8-10 times total...and this comp has only been shut off maybe two nights (~12 hours?) total in that time.
