Hey guys, just snagged an Alienware M17x R4 from the Dell outlet for a great price and Was looking at 2 options for hard drive setup.

Option 1 ($400)

OS: Samsung 840 Evo 500GB
Storage: 750GB WD Black 2.5mm

Option 2 ($600)

2x Samung 840 Evo 500GB in Raid 0

The rig is 100% going to be used only for LAN parties as I do I would say 65-70% of my gaming still on my home desktop.

Option 4: 2x1tb Evo, no RAID.

Is there a hard drive already included in the M17x? If so, I would just get an SSD and keep that hard drive as a storage drive.

How much are you looking to store on it?
I've got a laptop with a single 250Gig SSD and it stores everything I need it to. I can't load up on games like crazy and have to rotate them around but it does work.

so... i'd say either the above option 3 or an option 5: 1x 500Gig EVO if that's enough for you. You can always add another yourself later (and likely at cheaper prices than what dell charges)

RAID is fantastic with hard disks, but I'm not a huge fan of it for SSD's.

Option 5: 1 500GB Evo
1 2-4TB HDD of your choice.

Pairing a 750GB drive with a 500GB SSD just seems kind of stupid since that will obviously be for large storage purposes.

I don't have an issue with a 250gb 840 in my laptop.
17x's run hot as hell, and I don't like spinning disks in laptops anymore.

If you do the majority of your gaming on your desktop, I'd pickup a 250gb and call it good.

If you have a lot of games and need that much space for programs, i would go with 840 EVO 1tb, but if you can live with 500gb then that would be my choice.

For storage get the Hitachi 5k1500, 1.5tb 2.5 hdd, i bought two and really decent mechanical for storage.

i just bought the 128gb samsung pro, very happy...though i wish i got the 256gb version...or whatever size the samsung pro in that size....the evo is not as good, or reliable...the warrantys are different , the way they store data is different...the pro,s are more expensive, but more reliable...

Hmm well I have a coupon and GC with Amazon. Was thinking of going raid 0 with 2 500GB Evo's. Worth it?

My opinion is RAID0 is never worth it given the much higher chance of your data going bye bye.

Since your OP indicated this was a secondary traveling game machine, the risk of raid 0 is minimized. Also, you will likely be updating prior to each lan party since your main PC will be the one you keep most current.

Consider a pair of 128 or 256GB in a raid 0 plus a >2TB external drive. Keep your most popular games on the laptop and install files for all possible options on the external. The external can also serve as an additional backup target for your desktop.
