x850xtPE v.s. 6800ultra

which one got best picture quality? i dont care about the speed, performance ect... all i care is picture quality!

money and pricing does not matter.... only picture quality matter in this topic... x850xt PE or 6800 ultra for picture quality? and plz only mention these 2 cards nutitn else.

Well then the X850XT PE will have the best quality. Also, the X850XT PE should be better than the 6800Ultra also.

You got any proof of that?
All the reviews I read stated that both 2D and 3D on the 6x00's and 8x0's where the same?

Terra...

picture quality is subjective unless you look at the video with a magnifying glass. these pat answers "well of course abc is better than def, everybody says so" is just bullshit.

Oh, I thought the X800 series were equal to the 6800 series. and the X850 series were a tab bit better than the 6800 as they were a refresh.

Spoken like a true nvidia supporter.

Now, back to reality, the ATi wins hands down, it's not even up for debate anymore, not because everybody says so, but because everybody can actually see it.

We are talking 6800 vs 850 here...not 7900 vs x1900

Terra - Wish people would read the thread before posting...

There where NO pipeline design changes made from x800 to x850?!

Terra - Are people posting just to post?

ATI = Sharper & more contrast

Comparison shots please? :)

so which is release first? x850xtPE or 6800ultra? which is newer? which cum out first? which cum out last? and if posible can anyone give me their release date? jus a side question.

edit = oh and remember we not talking about each brand.... we talking about individual card... so if we leave the brand out of it... i think it will decrease the flaming and debate

I knew that part. I just thought they were a bit better. Guess not, was just posting as thats what I thought was to be true. Well guess I had the facts wrong. Wasnt trying to up my post count, just trying to help the guy...

ATI has the best Image Quality atm. We'll see next gen but yeah the 850XT PE is a better card than the 6800 series in IMAGE QUALITY.

the x850's had higher clock speeds, that's what made them faster.

As for image quality, I had an x800xt and my friend had a 6800u. Both looked quite good at the same settings. I think that ATI has better AF, while Nvidia has better AA.

google up some comparison shots of each, hell, I think there's prolly some in the [H] archives of reviews or on Anandtech.

Is this for games or something else?

i hope thats true..... and hope others agree with u so i can be certain that its a fact

ur opinion counts and will be in my head

The 6800(annouced some tine in April 2004) where out first, the X850(Dec 2004) was a refresh of the X800(May 2004) line

And as for X850's having better IQ than the X800's:

HardOCP - ATI Radeon X850XT-PE Preview

If you were to be given a “blind gaming test” between the X850XT-PE and X800XT-PE, we think that it would be near impossible to tell any difference between them based on gaming experience.

Try and get the others to find any evidence of a lead in IQ for ATI with the X800/X850's vs the 6800-series...
Try...

Terra - Then do the "math" after that ;)

thought no1 will answer that Question.... thanks buddy

Any evidence, reviews...anything to back that claim? :)

Terra...

Now i have gone from an X850XT to a 7900GT and can I tell the difference can I hell! I haven't seen a 6800 in action but can imagine there is next to no difference.

If you were talking about lower end model i.e. 6200TC Vs 9250 then the ATi does win in 2D there as far as my experience goes

How I can't wait for DX10 to arrive.
No more difference in IQ...only speed as preformance-meter...

That will however make some peeps on the forums seem like out-of-a-job :p ;)

Terra - But I will welcome the change :D

Ummmm I thought we were comparing the X850XTPE to the Nvidia line of cards, not the X850 vs the X800.

Anyways, I can post a few links that contain comparisons between nvidia's and ati's image quality. There was actually a guy on ocforums that bought a 7800GTX to replace his 9800pro that sold his 7800GTX because it made evrything look like pea soup when compared to the 9800.

Just to really poke it in.
The 6800's are SM3.0 cards and thus give better IQ in AOE3 eg. vs the SM2.0 X800/X850
Or they give the option to see FP16 HDR in FarCry...something the X800/X850 cannot do...
Fill in more as you like.

There are no differences in IQ generally though.
The choice is thus between preformance(X800/X850) or features/IQ(6800)

Terra - Did I leave anything out?

You give me hard evidence that the X850XT-PE-I-Hate-Long-Names has better IQ than the 6800 series then.

Terra - Your anecdote is proof of nothing...

Nobody that's seen the IQ will say anything but the X850XT. Ati's AA+AF simply are better.
But...
If you're lookng for PS3.0 effects, then the X850XT loses cause it cant render them.

link for some image quality comparisons. browse and decide.

honestly if you're playing a game and ACTUALLY paying attention to what's going on in the game...I doubt you'll see the subtle difference from each card.

great refference..... but the 6800ultra is overlclocked while the x850xtPE is stock... is that fair? the image quality of the 6800ultra overclocked seems smo0ther.....

edit = nevermind what i said.... each picture x850xtPE is better.... and each picture 6800ultra oc is better....

Comparison shots don't do justice... When you see it render ATI has sharper looking pictures... Nvidia looking faded out... Even the 9800 series has better IQ than Geforce 6 series..

Funny, that I experinced no IQ-loss going from a 9800 Pro to a 6800GT then

My eyes are fine...infact as we sit now, I would most likely do better than you in a vision test, sorry bubba...
Apperently my eyes are so fine that no one can show the differences on photos...hence even name a review that states anything like what you are claiming...nothing but cheap shots backed with hotair ;)

There are no proof.
The IQ is the same.
Try and find proof otherwise.
I have been asking for evidence...but no one seem to be able to lift the burden....

Terra - Some didn't even read the first post, before putting the gear in fanni-boi mode

There's no comparaison.

You see, the differences cannot be captured by a screenshot. Only AA and AF quality can be captured by a screenshot.

To be brutally honest, ATi cards produce a sharper, clearer image. They have higher quality control as well over add-in board makers (like Asus, Powercolor etc).

When is comes to Image Sharpness the number one guys are Matrox, followed by ATi then nVIDIA. This is not only in 2D display but also noticeable in 3D mode.

I personally believe that nVIDIA's form of adaptive AA is better then ATi's (though not by much and varies from titles to titles) ATi's AF has been superior for some time though as has there RGMS AA (Rotated Grid Multi Sampling algorythms).

There have been some reviews focussing mainly on Image Quality between the x8x0 series and the 6x00 series. I'll try and find one.
PC Perspective

FSAA
Looking at the first level of FSAA offered for each card, we can clearly see that ATI’s solution is doing a better job of cleaning up the jagged edges. Although NVIDIA’s next step in FSAA (2QAA), compares much more closely with ATI’s 2XAA quality the X800 cards still walk away with the better image quality overall. This can be clearly seen especially on the edges of the mountains in the rightmost section of the scene.
Increasing the level of anti-aliasing to 4X for each card, we see NVIDIA catching up to ATI in image quality. Although nearly identical, the ATI card does show a bit better quality on the tops of the mountains in the middle of the scene. Overall, this is nearly a draw with a slight nod going towards ATI.
Once again, we see the two cards producing very competitive images with one another once the maximum settings for FSAA are selected. Here, the images produced on the GeForce 6800 cards manages to beat the ATI cards in overall image quality by a narrow but evident margin. Looking under the brim of Tiger’s hat, we see that the NVIDIA cards are able to smooth those jaggies out while the X800 cards still show aliasing in their image.

AF
Comparing the two default images, we can clearly see the forementioned lighting scenario in action. In terms of relevant image quality characteristics, the only place we see any issue is directly under the door. The X800 cards show a distinct line where the door's bottom meets the floor. The GeForce 6800 cards seem to produce a rather blurred joint here, failing to have the same crispness as their counterparts.
Directing our attention towards the rail that leads straight to the door, we can already see a clear advantage the Radeon X800 cards have over the GeForce 6800 models. The ATI-related images show far more distinction and sharpness in this area whereas the NVIDIA-related images still have somewhat of a washed look to them. Further evidence of this is seen in the lines of the tile floor three-quarters the way to the door. Again, the X800 images are far crisper than those of the GeForce 6800 series.

So yeah.. x8x0 > 6x00 in Image Quality and Performance. But the 6x00 > x8x0 series in features (SM3.0).

Why not skip to the conclusion, instead of trying to hide it under a pile of quotes? :)

Although vendor !!!!!!s are pulling out their hair trying to convince the other whose products are the winner, the real winner these days is the gamer. Regardless of what color the logo is on the card you choose here, you are sure to have an exceptional gaming experience. Both image quality and performance have been brought to new heights leaving past contenders comfortably far behind.

And I could use this:
Once again, we see the two vendors producing nearly the same image as one another. Aside from some lighting differences, there is no appreciable advantage between the cards in terms of image quality.

This infact goes against your conclusion:
To better illustrate the comments and scenarios mentioned above, we have cropped the full images to focus directly on the objects in the horizon. With your attention geared towards these edges, you can clearly see how each card’s methods perform. In the end, it looks like ATI has a better image on lower settings with NVIDIA producing the best image at the maximum settings.

Terra - Did we read the same review? :)

Hehe... No cheap shots... In fact I have 20/20 vision...

There must be a reason why some people say ATI has better filtering/IQ... Nvidia owners say it's the same... Notice Nvidia card owners never say Nvidia IQ is better than ATI cards...

Why do you think that is?

Image quality is really subjective to the eye of the beholder. Some people don't mind how Nvidia image quality looks like... Nvidia has gotten better since the 6 series but still in lot of people's opinions it's still not on par with ATI...

Terra it's simple..

6x00 series cards cannot run games at 8xS unless they're old games. nVIDIA 6x00 cards also take a larger performance hit with 16xAF (rendering most games nearly unplayable).

That's why.

The maximum settings are not useable on these cards. Most people run 2x,4x FSAA with 8x AF on these cards. So although both end up almost tied at maximum settings.. the ability to use those maximum settings it's not there due to the performance of both cards.

I didn't hide anything.. I used pure logic. Now add to that the ability to use Adaptive AA on x8x0 cards with a small performance hit (which wasn;t covered in this article) and you've got a winning combination on ATi's side.
