Which GeForce 6800nu?

I just got an Abit KV8 Pro, a Athlon 64 3000+, and 512MB PC3200 RAM, and I am looking for a GeForce 6800nu. My price cutoff is about $310 or so, so it definately has to be a vanilla one.

Anyway, I have been looking at the different cards on newegg, and I was hoping someone could help me make a decision between them. I mostly play UT2k4 and plan on playing Doom 3, and I really don't care about any free games.

I see a lot about the BFG 6800 OC, but it doesn't appear to be overclocked nearly as much as the Prolink or the Gainward one (both at 400mhz core speed). I just fried my last rig, so I don't plan on overclocking for awhile  . I was hoping that someone might have experience with the Gainward or Prolink card and could point me toward a decision. Thanks.

This is my first post.

gainward is a FANTASTIC company....i dont know about prolink...and i havent seen if gainwards 2 fan cooler is better or worse....

i and many others have the gainward, its a great card. the 2 slot model has 2.2NS ram, the 1 slot model has 2.5NS ram.

MSi is good too, reputable company. XFX is also another good company b ut lacks a good cooling solution.

and for future reference, use the search button in your forum command list up there, people have asked this before.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will get the gainward. Does anyone know where I can get the two slot design?

I would go with the XFX, Gainward, or the Leadtek.

You can find links to where they are available for purchase here:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=379135

Here is the Gainward:

Here is the Leadtek:

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=14-122-193&DEPA=0

You can get the Leadtek at Newegg for just $276 after a $10 MIR but you will have to wait a few days for it cause its currently out of stock till like 8/31.

the stock core speeds on newegg are misleading. the gainward and prolink do not start at 400mhz core. most 6800nu are either 325 or 350 stock. I currently use a pny, its ok but if i could do it again i would go gainward to. gl with it!

I'd go for the eVGA - its $283 shipped on Newegg. I have the eVGA 6800 GT running @ Ultra speeds and couldn't be happier. I had a Leadtek GF4 Ti 4400 with a massive, dual-fan cooler, but it OCed like total shit. I guess I just got a bad card, but I chose not to buy into Leadtek's fancy-pants designs and my card OCs well anyway :).

Avoid the MSI card, it is plagued with problems. Mine was DOA and was RMA'd. I'm not the only one, check this out, there are many many ppl with the same problem. http://forum.msi.com.tw/thread.php?threadid=57402 . I've now bought a Leadtek 6800 vanilla and it's great. Getting 48.2fps in Doom3 1280x1024 aa x4, everything on except v sync

you mean NVIDIA didnt spec what speed memory to put on it?

nVidia and ATI just provide the cores while the vendors are free to include whatever features they desire. They decide what speed RAM modules to use on the graphics card.

I know with there 5x00 serise the card MFG were ordered to stick to NVIDIAs spec...that is why there all the same, same ns memory any everything, I thought this would hold true thru the 6x00 series......

Yep, I had an MSI 6800nu come DOA before I decided to RMA it for a GT.

A fried told me that some of the 6800 cards have 16 pipes enabled.
Would this make a lot better card if it was used with some fast ram?

Does anyone know of one that is being sold ?

I just can't justify paying 400+ for a $200 6800gt
(as well as a 9700 oc they call the x800 LOL)

6800 NUs have 12 pipes, use DDR1 memory, and operate at a lower core and memory frequency.

yes but he is saying that there are some that have all 16 pipes enabled.
I can't find one.
yes they all have ddr1, I ment that they didn't throw some junk slow memory on them to cut corners.

According to Unwinder (Rivatuner author) his Leadtek 6800nu 4 extra pipelines worked fine. Good news as I have one :D

It's really too bad that the V9999 is so much money. It doesn't even make sense to get one since at that price you might as well go with a GT but man that card looks cool. If only it were about a hundred or so dollars less expensive.

I agree, I love my eVGA 6800nu. As you can see by my sig, I have it oc'd to 375/830 (325/700 stock) and it's not even breaking a sweat...great card :)

no 6800NU or vanilla whatever u call them has 16pipes enabled, at stock.

but yes, there is a softmod coming which allows enabling 16pipes on certain cards.

Thanks 64bit_is_here that is what I was wanting to hear.
After I told him what you said he changed his statement to oh yea thats what I was saying.

hope its better than the old ati softmod that worked with some cards until ati got wind of it and changed the design :)

I did notice one thing on the 6800nu...it seemed to JUST fall short on every new game.
Not that its a bad card but it could not make it with aa and af enabled.

diablo111 how is your card doing oc?
if the new rivatuner allows the other pipes you should be smoking :)
more like a mini 6800GT at a damn good price point.

Remember that just because a 12->16 pipe soft mod works for someone doesn't mean it will work for you. There's the chance that one pipe is bad or you order the card and receive a different version (like what happened with Newegg and what was it, the 9800 SE?).

Runs stable as hell playing Doom3 for hours at a time @ 1280x1024 High Quality...no hiccups, no lock-ups, nothing but smooth gaming goodness :D

my 6800nu runs at the speeds in my sig, perfect on doom3 with 1280x1024 and high. Just make sure with a nu to not use AA or rez over 1280 because thats where it loses speed to the GTs, but set at or under that and this card frikin rocks.
