I've been running 5.0 for the longest time at home. It's been ok but there are occasional shutdown issues. I'm wondering if the update 1 or 2 is better. I've heard 5.1 has caused some issues for people.
 
vCenter 5.1 was a bit of a pain but ESXi has been fine on any version of 5 for me.
 
I've had shutdown issues even with U2. Basically, a restart is in progress hang. Other than that, solid.
 
The Internet says that 5.0 GA has been the buggies VMware release ever and it really shouldn't have been released. I don't have any personal experience with it because we waited till 5.1 to upgrade from 4. Once we installed 5.1 we had zero issues with it in our environment.

Host or VM shutdown? if it's the host I would look to the hardware.

I've been running every form of ESX from 3.0 to 5.1 and never had any issues with either Intel or AMD based systems just shutting down. Also since you gave no info in the OP regarding your hardware, I would also recommend making sure all the hardware is on the HCL.

Odd, enterprise wise the 5.0GA release was somewhat solid. Certainly not one of the best releases, but no where near the 4.0 debacle, or 3.5, or 3.0...
