I'm in the market to get a new HD for my main comp, and would rather not have to deal with an RMA due to poor shipping. To that end I want to know where have people purchased HDDs online that have been packaged well (i.e. plastic shock-proof end caps, foam with drive cutout, something equivalent WITHOUT using any static generators (packing peanuts))?

Would appreciate cautions as well as recommendations! Thanks.

 
ZZF did the best of the small number of places I've bought drives from. Newegg is clamshell inside of bubble wrap.
 
ZZF uses the foam shells. Never had a DOA drive from ZZF.

Newegg is static bag wrapped in buddle wrap then in the box. I've had drives(!) come DOA from Newegg.

I've also heard that HyperMicro is good - Use their ad on StorageReview.com to get free shipping. I must add the caveat that I have never bought from HyperMicro personally, although they came recommended from one of the SR forum veterans.

Good to know...thanks for the tips, guys. If we can gather more information about good and bad e-tailer drive shipping habits, this might be something worth mentioning in the sticky.

 
On a related topic, Seagate ships their drives back from RMA in some of the nicest packaging for hard drives I've seen. Solid cardboard box, thick foam, SeaShell. That's where the "Seagate tax" goes; worth every penny IMO.
 
Can't go wrong with ZZF imo. I bought my Seagate OEM and like what was stated earlier mine came in a foam hard drive shell. The drive fit very snugly inside. It actually took some effort to pull it out of the shell. The packaging as a whole felt very secure and safe to me.

Just got one back from them a few weeks ago actually. Fast turnaround for one thing. Was a clamshell inside some odd plastic brace thingies...no foam. They made me ship the dead one to them encased in a foam box, they could have done the same. ;p

Western Digital used to use these on retail drives. Not a big fan of them, but hey, it's better than having them loose.

I shipped 2 at a time; maybe that has something to do with how it got packaged. They must've thought I was a small business :p
