I'm really looking into getting a whole new system and Im defiently getting SLi/Crossfire solution with extreme edition Dual Core P4, blah blah. The one thing I'm looking at is the video solutions. I can get the 7800 GTX KO SLi edition or wait still ATi X1800 Xt Crossfire Edition comes out. Those really are my choices right now. I like the Crossfire becuse its 1gb of video memory w/ high clock rates and yet i like nvidia also because all games are made for nvidia. What would u guyz choose if your in my postion. Just looking for opinions really =/.. Thanks =)

Why P4 EE ? If you're doing this for gaming, then get an X2. I'm assuming money isn't an issue here

As for which one, wait for x1800xt's to be out and reviewed in xfire.

WhyP4EE? Well because of Dual Core with HT settings which equals 4cores. Im looking into overclocking it to like 3.8 or so. That should hold out nice in games and be amazing in multitasking situation. 100% of my time on comp I multitask and P4 is still best for that even compared to the Dual Core AMD's.

By way. do u know when Crossfire X1800XT comes out?

Not to start an argument over cpu's but Intel is not best at multitasking agains AMD X2 as far as what i've seen benchmark wise. Otherwise my advise would be to wait for the 512mb 7800 Phantom card which is supposed to be available in a few days and compare that option to the ATI X fire x1800xt. One thing to consider in the end though. Despite what you think about the video hardware. Nvidia already has 1 1/2 years head start with dual card solutions and because of this there is a humongous chance their solution will be more stable hardware and software wise.

You really can't assume what overclock you are going to get.

Im not really assuming. I've had almost every Pentium4 and there all overclock 800Mhz to 1Ghz like nothing. I saw some post on thme overclocking it and all hit 3.8Ghz from 3.2Ghz on air. Im getting Liquid cooling on my new comp.

What type of multitaksing are you talking about? Normal everyday kinds of stuff, or web server I/O kind of multitasking?

And, it's not four cores it's two phisical and two logical, or four threads.

yea i know its not four physical cores. it just acts like it and 4 threads yes. Thats very nice thing to have. Im not so much worried about the cpu more the video solution...

quite frankly, a super high end video solution is pretty much worthless without a really powerful CPU behind it, and the X2's are just more powerful, plain and simple.

the Pentium D's dont OC much without super high end cooling. youre probably looking at around 3.5-3.6ghz on air. itll game slower than your current p4

I agree, especially in gaming, AMD's trounce intel. Your dual card solution will be held back by the cpu you choose so even though this is a videocard thread you need to choose your components wisely for a dual card solution otherwise you wont see the dual card bennefit you desire.

Besides who beats who. Just say u have the best gaming CPU. which solution would u guyz choose???

Bottom line Look into the Nvidia 512GTX vs the ATI Cross fire 512 X1800XT and choose for yourself. My recomendation... Nvidia because of the 1 1/2 year head start. More stable, more reliable.

ill agree with the stable part, but not the reliable....ive had far more green team cards fail on me then nvidia (forinstance i just got 2x7800GT cards and 1 has a dead dvi port)

LMHO Just became a Nvidia fan after a few ATI problems throughout the years. I guess everybody has different experiences.

An X2 will still perform better, AND it won't put out nearly as much heat as a Pentium D will, AND it will overclock well, AND it will be better priced.

Also having two cards in SLi or Crossfire won't neccesarily mean that their memory capacities will be added.

Two 7800 GTXs which are both 256MB will not add up to 512MB in SLi. And I presume the same is true for Crossfire.

I am upgrading soon as well and here are some points that I considered such as yourself.

- Nvidia 7800GTX (EVGA) | They have been out for awhile and the drivers and just general SLI setup and ease of use is spot on looks like.

- Nvidia Nforce 4 SLI mobo (Asus) | The Intel and AMD boards just pack so many features more than you could want or use and are rock solid and can overclock fine in general.

ATI the cons against are rather simple.

- Price too expensive no real noticeable performance benefit over the Nvidia card offerrings.

- Heat/Cooling so far they run fairly hot not ideal for a HTPC or SFF so in the end if you are limited in options to reuse your existing hardware.

- Availability there aren't any motherboards with crossfire from any reputable manufacturer such as Asus for example. The product is relatively new has no support for commonly found features on most Nforce 4 boards and has terrible USB performance if it is using the old SB which also means you need to research your purchase even further.

- Again the entire line is new untried overtime and it's stability and performance are questionable at best as of yet. The x1800xt isn't even available STILL as of yet and it might not be widely available come next month. The rest of the line minus the x1800xl seems nonexistant as well.

These are the issues I considered prior to ordering the parts necessary.

Now a little offtopic but choose whatever processor you want the P4EE 3.2 is fine nothing wrong with it for gaming or general use whatever you want to use it for. You will not notice the difference using the P4 EE dual core and yes it does clock to 3.8 on air quite easily so easy a 9 month old could do it. Don't let people cloud your judgement with bias. Noone here would be able to tell the difference between either machine if they were unmarked and the system information were hidden :). The X2 4800+ just had a price cut and is around 790 bucks or so which prompted me to go with AMD this round instead of the P4EE dual core. The P4 EE with HT and dual cores is interesting and on top it's unlocked :p. Anyhow I went with price.

Read the AT article on the new Asus Intel mobo you will dig it and would consider that board for your new P4 EE Dualie as the mobo is sexy as hell.

Oh and again don't listen to the people giving you a hard time over the Intel it's not horrible and Dell XPS 600's with the P4 EE can clock to 3.8 on air and if Dell can do it guess what?

USMC said he had to lower quality settings in his games to make them playable on his 840EE compared to his X2 at 2.6ghz. his is at 3.7ghz on WATER.

no, a 9 month old cannot clock a pD to 3.8ghz. its harder to get that chip to that point than you think. just cause dell gives that option, just like every other board manufacturer out there, doesnt mean its gonna be stable.

"Dell tech support, how can i help you???"
"My pentium D EE xps 600 has been running for about 5 mins at 3.8 GHz, and it just fried....do you guys even test the machines before you ship them?"
"What a great idea! i will forward that to our technical group right away!"

Dude... not to be racist or anything, but yea... I noticed that too...

To make it even worse, my mom has a heavy accent and the two were basically incoherent arguing back and forth on the phone.

I'm not racisit either, Half of my friends are Indian most from Gujurat (sorry if misspelled) I'm more talking about how the dell reps pretend their not indian. I'm like... sure your name is Mike. ROFL

I know i'm echoing what other have said, but why a P4 EE? For the same money, you can get the 4800+ 2.4ghz 2x1mb cache cpu which is so much faster that the P4, that it's not even funny. I would also recommend going with the nVidia SLI platform as it's been out for a long time, and there has been lots of times for various bugs and issues to be worked out. If you plan on going with the new Asus A8N32 SLI, that's even better as it gives you dual 16x bandwidth even when in SLI mode. As for crossfire, I have yet to see a decent crossfire motherboard. Besides, the 512mb X1800xt isn't even due to be released for almost a month, and even then who knows when it will even become available. If you upgrade now, you'll enjoy state of the art visuals in gaming now, rather than waiting.

I won't argue with you since it's your opinion. That's terrible that whoever that guy is had to lower his settings and probably a rare case. I don't disagree with anyone on heat being a problem. I don't agree with the P4EE D being crap for gaming or anything though. They do reach 3.8 fairly easily and yes they are hot. Do you need to use water? No. Everyone loves water and the lowest temps available would be nice but not necessary.

My 9 month old actually did hit 3.8 easily with her own hand. I have 4 different machines here with the P4 EE D and they run fine. Each machine drives 10 displays. I have always had AMD and Intel machines at the same time and at least two machines for gaming since I play MMO's mainly. You will never tell the difference between the intel and the amd.

Go ahead and use all the same parts minus the mobo/cpu/ram you will not notice a difference while in a game. So far windows XP 64 feels snappier on the Intel system than the AMD go figure  . Both have 2 gigs of ram btw.

Anyways you are better off buying the AMD 4800+ X2 like I did since the price/performance is better than the P4EE dualie.

Different strokes for different folks I suppose...

EDIT: Oh and prior to FX and the whole AMD 64 it was the AMD heat problems you would hear people whining about :). I still have my old XP 1900+ on an epox 8kha+ board still works ;). AMD has always been kind of slow in general to an intel based system up until the 64 and FX lines it seems. I know the XP systems I had never felt or responded better than at the time a 2.4c and 2.533 p4 both had 1gig of ram. Well even before the XP line the pentium and P3 always lasted longer and in general were faster than a higher clocked AMD.

EDIT2: Every AMD/Intel system at least one of each has always had the same graphics card ram etc etc I would buy two ti4600's etc etc. Anyhow noone cares.

Over 20 posts talking about the Pentium D 840 EE? In Video Cards? In four hours? Should there be a mod surfing this forum around the clock? Party's over, head to one of the processor forums if you want to learn about who has the best dual core solution. Apologies to the OP - restart the thread if you want to get input on SLI vs Crossfire.
