after my 2 year Kt333 mobo died, I found a really cheap gigabyte nforce2 mobo on ebay to replace it

in it is my xp1700 (which previously ran @ 200 x 11 in another board)
and 2 x 256 MB of ddr400 (some off brand)
and 1 x 512 MB of ddr333 (kingston value, nothing special)

now Im curious to what you think would be a better performer for an HTPC (which is this boxes purpose, not a lot of PVR type stuff done though)

200 x 11 with 512MB ram?

or 166 x 11 with 1GB

and I also run F@H on it

what are your ram usage patterns? Do you always stay under 512MB or do you exceed it?

If you exceed 512MB then you would go into swap, so 1GB (although the bus is slower) will perform better.

However, if you are always under 512MB usage, then you'll benefit from the faster bus.

I don't see anything I do eating up past 512
however, I haven't done any PVR stuff yet, which Im thinking could suprass the 512
but Im not sure
