I'm mainly looking for a 19"-21" CRT around 200 dollars and found these:

This one is at my local Best Buy
SAMSUNG 997DF-T/T 19" CRT Monitor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824001166

And these on ebay
Sony SGI CPD-G520K 21inch Flat Screen CRT Monitor
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=41807&item=5213425359&rd=1

SUN/Sony GDM-5410 MULTISCAN 21" Perfect-Flat Screen SONY Trinitron short-neck MONITOR for PC and SUN
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5206555698&category=41807

So which of these would be the best choice?

I ahve the 997DF

Its not the best and cant compete with a 930SB

But fir the price and the availibilility plus the warrenty. It is a great value and you will not be disapointed,

Good luck.

It is really hard to buy sight unseen. I recommend you find a place you can actually view them. Granted, that can be hard.

When my 8-yr-old NEC up and died, I had to have an immediate replacement, which put me at the mercy of what Circuit City had in stock. They had four 17" CRTs. The Compaq and HP both had wing speakers that I didn't really want, there was another brand. I ended up buying an eMachines because I thought the image quality and color were better than on the others. I hate the bling-bling light in the front, but I cover it with post-its.

Overall, though, it's been a great monitor for the price. I would have never even considered an eMachines if I hadn't seen it in person. Sure, I was drooling over that widescreen Samsung LCD for $1300, but I was on a budget. :)

I'll put my vote towards the 997df. I've owned one for about 5 months now and it's seems to be a very solid monitor. It is absolutely fantastic for gaming, but it's relatively mediocre for most other things. If you're a graphic artist or you are just really picky about things being absolutely perfect, then perhaps look elsewhere; but for gaming this thing is a dream.

I picked out those Sonys because I was always under the impression that Sony Trinitrons were the best CRTs.
So it would be better to get the 19" Samsung 997df over the 21 inch Sony Trinitron?
If anything, I will probably be buying one or ordering of those today.

Quite simply no. The Samsung may be a nice monitor but it's a shadow mask, and carries all the inherant pitfalls of a shadow mask CRT such as lower contrast, lower brightness, lower sharpness, and more colour bleeding.

Another option if you don't want to buy used would be a monitor that has Mitsubishi's Diamondtron AG tube. The NEC and Mitsu's aren't available anymore, but Lacie and few other companies are still making them.

So something like this?

22" MITSUBISHI NEW DIAMONDTRON FLAT TUBE! $ 200 dollars
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5207002179&category=41807

Also, it says it is 0.24 mm. The Samsung 997df is .20mm. Isn't it the lower the better and wouldn't that make the Samsung better?

Right type of tube, but just by looking at the specs I can tell that it's very old. A high-end Diamondtron of recent manufacture should do 1600x1200@100hz.

The dot pitch of aperture grille and shadow mask tubes aren't measured the same way, so you can't compare the two. Indeed tighter is better, but the maximum refresh rate of a CRT is more indicative of quality than the dot pitch.

i would opt for for samsung synchmaster 1100df <-- is model i have

2048x1536@75hz

21" 20 inch viewable

i have this myself and luvin every minut of it.

Ok I have done some research on these monitors and people generally had good things to say about them. I looked for a newer Diamondtron but found that they ange from 4-5 thousand dollars, so that's way outa what I can spend.
So now from these which would you choose?

21" Sony Trinitron FD Perfect Flat Black IBM P260 655263N DVI+SVGA .24mm 1920x1440@75Hz
http://www.azatek.com/details.asp?iid=524 for $239

22" Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2040u NF Natural Flat Screen .24mm 2048x1536
http://www.azatek.com/details.asp?iid=485 for $269

The 2 above were "Off Lease Inventory. Used" according to azatek.com.

or a new 19" Samsung 997df
which I can go pickup from BestBuy

I'm still open to ideas for 19-22" inch monitors and am going to do some more browsing but the 3 above are the ones I am mainy looking at.

Another question I have is if the monitors were used, how much longer will they last? I'm lookin the monitor I buy to last for 5-6 years.

Thx

I would like to get it but it's out of what I can afford. At most, I am looking to spend $300.
