Which CPU?

What do you guys think:

x2 4400+
x2 4600+
opteron 170
opteron 175

This will be going in my rig in my sig below (the one with the dfi board)

I mostly play counter-strike and encode divx, about half of the time, i do both at the same time

as i do have the board and ram for it, i will be overclocking

170 pwns for overclocking, so i say go with that one.

would i most likely get higher with the 170 than the 175?

and is it worth getting over my current x2 3800? i'm thinking that the extra cache will help a lot for the divx encoding, plus i can overclock the 170 higher than the x2 3800


also, just cause i'm paranoid tonight, the opteron 170 is compatible with my mobo, right?

It'll work in your board if it runs x2, and another vote for the 170

can you enlighten me to as why everyone is choosing the opteron 170 over the 175?

out of those 4, i would go for the 170
i believe the only difference between the two is that the 170 has a 10x multi while the 175 has an 11x multi but the price difference isn't worth it imo
however...why upgrade?! is the x2 3800 not sufficient?? if you want to spend that much money just get another 7800gt for SLi

I'd think Divx encoding would be far more depending on clock rate than cache size. I doubt you're getting many cache misses on your average encode.

well, i'm basically going to have about $320 for free, since my dad bought me a new mobo and ram. the $320 is coming from selling my a8n premium and my 1gb of twinx pc4000. I figured that i might want to upgrade something, and i don't think that the x-fi elite pro is a wise decision (i need the extra box to be external). I figure that i could get about 280-300 for my x2 3800 so that would add up to about $600.

For that cheap, I'd def. hit the 175. You do have a DFI mobo capable of running high HTT, but IMHO, the less stress you have to place on each component in your rig, the better your OC results are.
