In two weeks I'll be upgrading to an A64. I currently have a 3200+ barton.

I'm for sure with the 2 6800GT's and A8N, but what I'm not sure of is the cpu. Can I get a good OC out of the 3000+, or will I need to get a 3500+ winchester to oc?
 
3000 isn't bad, I've had a little better luck with the 3200 .90 winnie.
 
At least the 3200+ Winnie so U get the extra multiplier. But i just went and bought me the 3500+ to be sure that I have the flexibility to choose betwen FSB and multi.

Alrighty, thanks for the input. Now for the hsf :D I like the thermalrite design that looks like a car engine with headers. Any other ideas for hsf?
 
don't get the a8n. get either the msi k8n neo4 or dfi lanparty. they are far better boards.
that being said, if you can plop down the money for two 6800gt's, i would get more than a 3000 or 3200. get a 3500+ as a minimum, fx-55 if you really want to splurge.

So on the 3200 you can change the multiplier, but not on the 3000 ? I ask because I am saving for an upcoming rig and this does matter to me. If the multiplier can't be changed on the 3000+, but can on the 3200, that makes a difference to me.

Why is the A8N not a good board ? Again this matters to my build, so I am very curious of your position as up until now that is the board I have chosen to get.
 
the thing with the a64's (non-fx's) is that you can use the stock multi and all the ones below it to 4x. nothing above stock.

and there are issues with the asus board and overclocking the memory using 1t. if you don't plan to overclock, then by all means, keep the asus on the list, however, the things i read about the three boards show the dfi and msi to be much better. which is the best between those two remains to be seen, however i think it will be like how it is now: dfi is better at oc'ing, but the msi is faster at the same speed.
 
Well with my current choice being the 3000+ and all the nice overclocks I have been seeing, I would be stupid to to want to overclock the thing, so I guess I will be looking at a new board. That DFI board did look impressive in the 1 review I read, but I have never owned one of their boards before so it will be a careful choice.
 
dfi has a lot of respect with many enthusiasts. i personally think they're great boards, but not for the faint of heart, there is a lot of stuff that have been enabled in the bios you can change for maximum performance, but it takes a lot of fiddling.
