Hey I am building a setup for my mom and am out of the loop when it comes to hardware. (Haven’t been reading up on the latest hardware for the past year or so)

The question is at Newegg they have P4 2.8C and a 2.8E for about the same price. Which should I get? I am planning on using the ASUS P4P800 SE mobo.

I have the the p4 2.8c and I really like it. Moving from a P4 1.7 sddr machine to this one was a huge boost especially in gaming. Im not real sure but isnt the E series prescotts? if so, Ive been reading that they run real hot.

Is cost a consderation??
If it is, it may be worth looking at the 2.4A Prescott P4(Prescott with 533FSB instead of 800, no HT). It is about $70-$80 USD cheaper than any 2.8G P4. It also runs reasonably cool.

If you are trying to build a really cheap computer that would still perform reasonably well I would steer you away from Intel. I know this is the Intel forum, but no one can deny that the Athlon XPs offer an excellent price to performance ratio. If you really wanted to go cheap, the 1.8 ghz Durons perform well also. If this is just an internet / email PC then go AMD and you'll save quite a bit.

unless your mom is into gaming, the aforementioned 1.8 will do very well with your mother.

If you haven't bought the mobo yet, I'd also suggest an AMD rig. You can get a mobo and proc for the price of the Intel Proc and probably have money left over.

I'm a big fan of Intel myself, but I really like AMD as well, so don't get me wrong.Unless mom had a need for a blazing fast computer, something like an Asus A7n8x with an Athlon 2000+ would work, or even a Barton 2500+ to be more modern. That is your best Bang for the Buck.

Yes, a nice Asus motherboard and cheap Athlon CPU would do wonderfully. Just make sure you don't get a Palimino core (are those still around?) because those run a lot hotter and might stress the stock cooling. You probably don't have to worry about this if you buy it new, but if you buy it used you might. Or just get a Duron, which probably have the best performance/price ratio out there right now.
