Which CPU to upgrade to?????

I use my home PC primarily for entertainment and gaming. I currently have an AMD Barton 2800 for a CPU and am trying to decide where to go next. I am not looking at leading technology, but rather at having a rig that will run Vista and 10X without any problems. Do I go to an Athlon 64 (3800 is only $142) or go to a C2D (E6400 is only $220)? I really don't want to invest $3K in my upgrade, but am willing to go around $1,000 or so. I guess the selection of the CPU will pretty much drive the MOBO and RAM and going to a PCI interface will make me buy a new video board. But a lot hinges on what CPU to buy.

Any advice would be appreciated, even if it doesn't match the two ideas above.

thanks

I'd suggest 6300/6400, tforce 965/Gigabyte DS3/S3 965 mb, and some D9xxx chips memory like crucial anniversary PC5300 which does at least 450+.

If you have more money, buy p5b deluxe

Did you just recommend an Intel C2D 6300 or 6400?
I think you also said to get PC5300 RAM, but am lost on the rest......

I agree with kiwi.fruit if you have $1000 to spend on an upgrade, go with core 2 duo (e6300 or an e6400) with a good overclocking board. I'm not sure which board is the best cuz I don't follow intel very much :p.

if you want AMD... 939 opteron 165s are great and OC very well and if you have DDR it will save you $200+ also and opteron 165 @2.8+ with 2gb of ram and a 8800gts is still a very good system and would be way under your budget even with 8800gts.

but C2D is defiantely a good way to go also
