I am thinking of either going with a pentium d 830 or a pentium 6xx. Not sure which one to really go with. Pc will be used more for gaming than anything. I going with a Asus P5WD2 Premium and Corsair XMS2 DDR2 1000 and a XFX 7800GTX. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks
 
The 6xx or 5xx series should provide you enough multitasking ability, should you need it in a pinch. The 8xx series is obviously better in this department, but it's also much more difficult to power and cool.
 
I not really worried about the cooling or power. I am buying a new power supply anyway. I was looking at the OCZ Powerstream 520W for the power supply. I thought having the Pentium D would be nice but not sure if i really need it.

Wouldn't single core with hyperthreading support multithreaded games well too? I mean, as far as you OS is concerned, a single processor with hyperthreading is not different than dual core.

I don't know about well. Obviously better than a single core proc without hyperthreading.

That's not really true. With one HT P4, the OS knows that there is a single core, and schedules accourdingly. There is a huge difference between multi-core and HT, and the OS knows it.
 
I have been leaning towards the Pentium D 830 but was not sure if it is the correct choice. I saw the price cuts on the 6xx series and starting wondering if the D's are a better value. I have heard you can overclock the D's pretty well also.
 
id think i'd go with a 640 for now with the asus 955mobo, then upgrade to the new 65nm dual core in first quater 06 and sell the 640. Or better yet, wait for the new conroe if you can until 2nd half of 06 then upgrade to the dual core when it is released.
 
I would wait till then but this pc is slow and outdated. It has p4 1.6 and a ati radeon 8500. Just ready to get it updated and faster. I was waiting for ati's new R520 to come out but i tired of waiting now and just going with nvidia. As long as my pc is pretty current after i update it i will keep it with the same configuration for quite a long time. I have had this 1.6 for about 3 years now.
 
yeah i know what you mean AC3, ive been buying components for my new computer im building too, power supply,case,vfd display, etc. I just think there will be some much change in the next 3 years (especially the next 10 months) that you should consider just a tempoary upgrade first. But its your money and up to you as usual. The 930 im guessing may be a better overclocker if thats what your going for due to it drawing less power.
 
There will be so much change in the next few years and don't want to get burned on upgrading my pc. Your point is good too, to just upgrade to a 6xx and then do another upgrade when the 65nm comes out. Just need to make up my mind on what i want to do.
 
Go with the P4 660 priced at $401 or if you really want to go the dual core route wait until Prelser is released. The current Smithfield dual core processors simply run too hot and they don't tend to overclock very well.
 
I would go with a 6xx processor for now, since they just got there prices cut. Then when Conroe comes out in a dual core form, get one of those. If Conroe lives up to expectations, its going to one hell of a processor.
 
After thinking about it and reading everyone's views, I think i have decided to just go with a 650 for now and then upgrade if the next intel dual core cpu is better than the current one. Seems like that is the best way to go at this point. Thanks for all the help :)
