decided I'm going to switch to an Intel based gaming rig. Current system is FX-6300 / Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 and managed to OC the FX to 4.6GB stable using air cooling. What hardware would be either a lateral or upward move from the current AMD based hardware I'm running? The graphics card is a GTX 970 and I plan to upgrade to a GTX 1070 or 1080 in the near future ...

My budget is $300 for both cpu and mobo. Any Intel cpu/mobo recommendations are appreciated. Thanks

Unless you need something today, I'd wait and see how the new Ryzen's do. They're lower cost and supposed to be decent performers.

In the Intel range with a $300 budget for CPU/MB/RAM, you're going to be hard-pressed to buy anything new, and you're going to bottleneck a 1080.

Not sure where your located, but if you have a microcenterl near you, you can get 7600k and an entry level z270 board from gigabyte or asus for around 300 bucks after the combo discount. Thats not going to include memory though. I agree with Bandalo though, if your looking to build new on the cheaper side of things iI would wait to see how the Ryzen 5 launch shakes out in a few weeks.
