Which CPU for P4TE?

My boss gave me a bunch of computer parts and one of the motherboards is a Asus P4TE but needs a cpu. I'd like to play around with overclocking with this board and need to know if any of you can tell me what cpu works best with this board? I think it can use anything from a 1.7 to a 2.6 but I'm not positive. It came with a 1.7 but I think I broke it by putting it in the wrong way, didn't have it lined up the right way and put power to it. Would that damage the MB too? Thanks!
