I have a Pentium 4 Prescott 3.0E ghz with stock heatsink and 1gb corsair ram. I have overclocked it to 3.5Ghz and its running like at 70c temp.I only have two fans(one in the side panel and the other with the heatsink) What is the best cpu cooler to buy under 40 bucks?
 
xp90. thats all there is too it. best sub 40 dollar heatsinks. pair it up with a delta high speed triblade and youll be golden
 
I would put it back to stock speeds as 70 degrees im assuming idle cannot be good for your chip. Then yes the xp-90 or xp-90c is your best bet. If you want quiet just get a panaflo and put it on low setting or high according to your heat\noise needs.
 
im gonna say the zalman cnps7000b just because i got one today for my p4 3.2e cpu @ 4.2ghz and i droppped 7-8 degrees with it
 
You should get the xp-90 and also add another fan pulling air out of the case in the back.

or for those of you who want to be able to hear yourself think, you could get the Thermaltake SilentTower cooler like what I have. it keeps my current 3.0 630 @ 4Ghz at nice and cozy (sp?) temps in the mid 50C area...

you could get a delta tri-blade lowspeed, and youll be fine with that xp90. im not gonna lie, but im not a thermaltake fan, but i dont wanna start a war, so lets just say for price to performance ratio, a 25 dollar xp 90 and a 13 dollar delta triblade highspeed, that can be voltmodded to run at 7v's or a 13 dollar delta tri-blade lowspeed, will beat a 40 dollar silent tower anyday.
 
and my xp90 keeps my 2800+ @ 2.5ghz with 1.65vcore at 52ºC, and thats using abit crappy temp monitoring. and i love your inverted atx. it looks awesome
 
Ok thanks for the replies guys, I think I will go with the xp-90. The stock heatsink is very loud. How loud is the xp-90? And also where is the cheapest place I can buy it? I want something silent and that can keep my cpu cool.
 
www.svc.com that where i got mine for 25 bucks. if they are instock, jump on em. and you hafta buy a fan with the 25 dollar one, look for a 92x38 delta tri blade lowspeed fan, or highspeed if you wanna volt mod it
 
the XP-90 is as loud as the loudest fan you would like to put on it.

panaflo high is 35 db, panaflo medium is 30 db, panaflo low is 27 db.

delta 25mm thick low speed is about 30 db, and delta 38 mm thick low speed is about 36 db.
 
if you want performance AND silence dont get an xp90 get an xp120 and a 120mm fan
 
well, if his mobo can fit it, i dont think hes told us what kidna mobo he has, so as a best bet for compatability, id say xp90.
 
you can fit an xp120 on that mobo. it says ok on thermalrights list of compatable mobos. the xp120 is HUGE and it doesnt weigh alot. id say pick i up.

Agreed, Lian Li (I presume) knows what it's doing. One suggestion: heat rises, so I'd recommend flipping your chipset HSF assembly. Notice that Abit designed it to point up, but that was engineered around a standard ATX mounting.*
Just out of curiosity, most people running Fatal1ty boards wouldn't use Optima RAM. Can I ask what made you choose PNY?

On topic: Another vote for the XP90, although I don't like my Panaflo. I replaced it with a Zalman Stealth, and it's doing an awesome job cooling my A64 now that it's past its burn-in cycle. I sold my Panaflo together with my Swiftech/AXP setup.
 
you gotta love abits included mobo red leds. i have a question though, what if you have a blue color scheme. looks like the greatness that is known as the fatalilty isnt a choice for you.

because I bought the motherboard and CPU from Comp USA and thats all they had for DDR2 memory.

but dont worry, I'm not keeping it for long. I've already ordered some Patriot DDR2 memory which will be here in a few days. I'll then take the PNY stuff back to Comp USA.
 
final point that i should have thought of earlier: XP-90 is not for socket T. as long as the XP-120 will fit, it's a good sink, and i happen to have had really good experience with panaflo and delta fans. so......

funny you should ask because I was about to start a thread in the FS section tomorrow with a bunch of P4 goodies for sale to which one of the items is an XP-120 that was litterally only used for two weeks before it was packed up again.

the customer switched over to an LGA775 setup and he bought a different cooler. I'm selling it for $45 shipped which will include a decent 120mm fan.

I have just overclocked the CPU to 3.6 ghz. I tried raising the DIMM voltage +2 but it didnt wanna boot to windows,, it went to BSOD. FSB right now is 240x15. Easytune gives me temp readings of 65C with the fan running at 3510 RPM

clean? my computer is actually filthy. :D J/K - I'm very anal about keeping everything I own in tip-top shape and my computer equipment is certainly no exception.
