I am about to get this Fatal1ty AN8 SLi from a user here. A good deal I could not pass it up.
Now I was curious; What's the best CPU to put to this board ? Will a X2 5200+ Windsor work on this board ? I am getting conflicting info...Help me out guys. I am a pretty hardcore gamer. I plan on matching this with an 8800 GTX and the best ram I can get. I am not a big OC'er but I am sure I will play around a bit to see what it can do. I am more interested in a stable, solid box. I just want the best cpu for this mb.

Thanks.

This is all they list on Abit's site that is compatiable that MB http://www.abit.com.tw/test_report/Fatal1ty%20AN8%20SLI/

i'd assume it's a socket 939 board. meaning you have to get a 939 chip. as far as i know the 5200+ is a socket AM2.

Yes it is a 939 socket. but on the site it has the following:

Processor
- Supports AMD Socket 939 Athlon 64/64FX & Athlon 64 X2 dual-core Processors
- With 2GHz system bus using Hyper Transport™ technology
- Supports AMD CPU Cool ‘n’ Quiet Technology

Ahhhh I get it... Socket AM2 provides support for DDR2 memory. Socket AM2 is almost identical to socket 939 but uses a protective mechanism (a manufacturing “key”) designed to prevent any socket 939-pin CPUs (DDR1 only) from being inserted into a socket AM2 motherboard, and to prevent socket AM2 CPUs (DDR2 only) from being inserted into a socket 939-pin motherboard.

So whats the best 939 cpu to get for this MB ? Opteron 180 ?

I have that exact motherboard, and have been running a X2 4400 for almost one year with no problem's......But right now I would go all out for the top dog of Socket939 = FX-60, buy now before they are gone for good, cost around $300+

Yeah I was headed down the FX path. You think that is better than an Opteron 185 ?
I've heard the Opteron's run cooler and are more stable. I just want the best 939 CPU I can get today. Like I said I will be using this for a hardcore game box until later this year when I make the jump to upgrade...Not sure which route I will take just yet.

A 8800GTX does NOT need the top of the line cpu to keep up with game's. Even a mid level $300.00 cpu compared to a $1,000.00 top dog is like 1% difference in high resolution.

I say get the FX-60 and be done with it, that baby will last ya until next year when the 9800Ultra arrives and then the revised AMD QuadCores will be available

Look at this review with the 8800GTX and 8800GTS, a cheap $100 3800+ compared to FX-62 which is close to $500 shows no difference in high resolution, it is all VideoCard power

From what I've read, an FX-60 will currently bottleneck no one graphics card. However, an SLi'd pair of 8800GTXes will occasionally bottleneck on current FX chips, likely moreso on older ones.

I got your money order today Im packing your board for shipment tonight:) I ran a 4400X2 in the board myself. But that was when FX 60s were a grand. Anything from a 4400X2 up to the FX 60 will make a great CPU for a gameing rig for the next year. It just depends on what you want to spend. I have a good used 4400X2, I have a new opty 170 CCBBE 0615 and I have a FX 60 new retail. I will give you a good price on the used 4400X2 and ship it along if you need a CPU still. Or Ill beat the current prices on a retail FX 60 and send it along if you want to go that route just let me know:)

Thanks again Zeldor for a great deal ! I think I am going to take your FX60 as well. And just a plug here....Zeldor is a great seller ! Mad props to ya  !!
